He came unto his own, and his own received him not. HE CAME UNTO HIS OWN [ ta (G3588 ) idia (G2398 )], AND HIS OWN [ hoi (G3588) idioi (G2398)]. It is impossible to give in English the full force of this verse. In the first clause it is 'His own [things]'-meaning 'His own Messianic rights and possessions:' in the second clause, it is 'His own [people];' meaning the special people who were the more immediate subjects of His Messianic kingdom (see the note at Matthew 22:1)....

11._He came into his own_. Here is displayed the absolutely desperate wickedness and malice of men; here is displayed their execrable impiety, that when the Son of God was manifested in flesh to the Jews, whom God had separated to himself from the other nations to be His own heritage, he was not _acknowledged _or _received_. This passage also has received various explanations. For some think that the Evangelist speaks of the whole world indiscriminately; and certainly there is no part of the world which the Son of God may not lawfully claim as his own property. Nothing more fully shows the darkness of men's minds, than that when the Light had appeared, there needed a witness to call attention to it. Verse John 1:11. _HE CAME UNTO HIS OWN_] τα ιδια - to those of his own _family, city, country:-and his own people_, οιιδιοι-his own _citizens, brethren, subjects_. The _Septuagint, Josephus_, and _Arrian_, use these words, τα ιδιοι and οι ιδιοι, in the different senses given them above. _RECEIVED HIM NOT._] Would not acknowledge him as the _Messiah_, nor believe in him for salvation. HE CAME UNTO HIS OWN - His own “land” or “country.” It was called his land because it was the place of his birth, and also because it was the chosen land where God delighted to dwell and to manifest his favor. See Isaiah 5:1. Over that land the laws of God had been extended, and that land had been regarded as especially his, Psalms 147:19. HIS OWN - His own “people.” There is a distinction here in the original words which is not preserved in the translation. It may be thus expressed: “He came to his own land, and his own people received him not.” They were his people, because God had chosen them to be his above all other nations; had given to them his laws; and had signally protected and favored them,...

EXPOSITION THE title of the book is differently given in the manuscripts and ancient versions, and the differences are so considerable that they cannot be referred to the original text. The simplest form of the title is found in א, B, D, and is nothing more than "_according to_ John," ΚΑΤΑ ΙΩΑΝΝΗΝ (B gives only one N in John's name, but א two); and this is followed by the vulgate and Syriac as a running title.
