39._It was about the tenth hour; _that is, the evening was approaching, for it was not more than two hours till sunset. The day was at that time divided by them into twelve hours, which were longer in summer and shorter in winter. But from this circumstance we infer that those disciples were so eagerly desirous to hear Christ, and to gain a more intimate knowledge of him, that they gave themselves no concern about a night’s lodging. On the contrary, we are, for the most part, very unlike them, for we incessantly delay, because it is not convenient for us to follow Christ....

37-42 The strongest and most prevailing argument with an awakened soul to follow Christ, is, that it is he only who takes away sin. Whatever communion there is between our souls and Christ, it is he who begins the discourse. He asked, What seek ye? The question Jesus put to them, we should all put to ourselves when we begin to follow Him, What do we design and desire? In following Christ, do we seek the favour of God and eternal life? Verse 39. _COME AND SEE._] If those who know not the salvation of God would _come_ at the command of Christ, they should soon _see_ that with him is the fountain of life, and in his light they should see light. Reader, if thou art seriously inquiring _where_ Christ dwelleth, take the following for answer: He dwells not in the _tumult of worldly affairs_, nor in _profane assemblies_, nor in _worldly pleasures_, nor in the _place_ where _drunkards_ proclaim their shame, nor in _carelessness_ and _indolence_. But he is found in his _temple_, wherever _two or three are gathered together in his_ _name_, in _secret prayer_, in _self-denial_, in _fasting_, in _self-examination_. He also _dwells_ in the _humble, contrite spirit_, in the _spirit of faith_, of _love_, of _forgiveness_, of universal _obedience_; in a word, he dwells in the _heaven_ of heavens...

COME AND SEE - This was a kind and gracious answer. He did not put them off to some future period. Then, as now, he was willing that they should come at once and enjoy the full opportunity which they desired of his conversation. Jesus is ever ready to admit those who seek him to his presence and favor. ABODE WITH HIM - Remained with him. This was probably the dwelling of some friend of Jesus. His usual home was at Nazareth. THE TENTH HOUR - The Jews divided their day into twelve equal parts, beginning at sunrise. If John used their mode of computation, this was about four o’clock p. m. The Romans divided time as we do, beginning at midnight. If John used their mode, it was about ten o’clock in the forenoon. It is not certain which he used....

EXPOSITION THE title of the book is differently given in the manuscripts and ancient versions, and the differences are so considerable that they cannot be referred to the original text. The simplest form of the title is found in א, B, D, and is nothing more than "_according to_ John," ΚΑΤΑ ΙΩΑΝΝΗΝ (B gives only one N in John's name, but א two); and this is followed by the vulgate and Syriac as a running title. The immense proportion of the uncials—A, C, E, F, G, L, and eight or nine others—read "Gospel according to John" (Εὐαγγέλιον κατὰ Ιωάννην). This is followed by Tregelles, Lachmann, Alford. The T.R., with a large number of manuscripts, reads, "The Gospel according to John;" and in Stephen's third edition the word "holy" occurs before "Gospel."
