And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet? AND THEY ASKED HIM, AND SAID UNTO HIM, WHY BAPTIZEST THOU THEN, IF THOU BE NOT THAT ('THE') CHRIST, NOR ELIAS, NEITHER THAT ('THE') PROPHET? Thinking that he disclaimed any special connection with the Messiah's kingdom, they very naturally demand his right to gather disciples by baptism. (See the note at .)...

25._Why then dost thou baptize _? By laying down those three degrees, they appear to form a very conclusive argument_: if thou art not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor a prophet_; for it does not belong to every man to institute the practice of _baptism_. The _Messiah _was to be one who possessed all authority. Of _Elijah _who was to come, they had formed this opinion, that he would commence the restoration both of the royal authority and of the Church. The _prophets _of God, they readily grant, have a right to discharge the office committed to them. They conclude, therefore, that for John to _baptize _is an unlawful novelty, since he has received from God no public station. But they are wrong in not acknowledging him to be that _Elijah _who is mentioned by Malachi 4:5; though he denies that he is that _Elijah _of whom they foolishly dreamed....

19-28 John disowns himself to be the Christ, who was now expected and waited for. He came in the spirit and power of Elias, but he was not the person of Elias. John was not that Prophet whom Moses said the Lord would raise up to them of their brethren, like unto him. He was not such a prophet as they expected, who would rescue them from the Romans. He gave such an account of himself, as might excite and awaken them to hearken to him. He baptized the people with water as a profession of repentance, and as an outward sign of the spiritual blessings to be conferred on them by the Messiah, who was in the midst of them, though they knew him not, and to whom he was unworthy to render the meanest service....

Verse 25. _WHY BAPTIZEST THOU THEN?_] Baptism was a very common ceremony among the Jews, who never received a proselyte into the full enjoyment of a Jew's privileges, till he was both baptized and circumcised. But such baptisms were never performed except by an ordinance of the Sanhedrin, or in the presence of three magistrates: besides, they never baptized any _Jew_ or _Jewess_, nor even those who were the _children_ of their _proselytes_; for, as all these were considered as born in the covenant, they had no need of baptism, which was used only as an introductory rite. WHY BAPTIZEST THOU THEN ... - Baptism on receiving a proselyte from “paganism” was common before the time of John, but it was not customary to baptize a “Jew.” John had changed the custom. He baptized “all,” and they were desirous of knowing by what authority he made such a change in the religious customs of the nation. They presumed, from the fact that he introduced that change, that he claimed to be a prophet or the Christ. They supposed that no one would attempt it without “pretending,” at least, authority from heaven. EXPOSITION THE title of the book is differently given in the manuscripts and ancient versions, and the differences are so considerable that they cannot be referred to the original text. The simplest form of the title is found in א, B, D, and is nothing more than "_according to_ John," ΚΑΤΑ ΙΩΑΝΝΗΝ (B gives only one N in John's name, but א two); and this is followed by the vulgate and Syriac as a running title. THE BAPTIST'S WITNESS ABOUT HIMSELF. Instead of recounting the work and mission of the Baptist, as the other gospels, the writer selects incidents which show him as the Witness. These incidents are certainly told in terms which reflect later Christian thought. But they contain much that does not obviously contribute to the writer's special purpose, and which suggests real knowledge or at least trustworthy tradition. If several of Jesus-' earliest disciples were followers of the Baptist, the prominence assigned to his ministry in the Synoptic account receives a natural explanation.
