John 4:45

Then when he was come into Galilee, the Galilaeans received him, having seen all the things that he did at Jerusalem at the feast: for they also went unto the feast. THEN, WHEN HE WAS COME INTO GALILEE, THE GALILEANS RECEIVED (OR WELCOMED) HIM, HAVING SEEN ALL THE THINGS THAT HE DID AT [`IN' en (G1722 )] JERUSALEM AT THE FEAST: FOR THEY ALSO WENT UNTO THE FEAST - proud, perhaps, of their countryman's wonderful works at Jerusalem, and possibly won by this circumstance to regard His claims as at least worthy of respectful investigation. Even this our Lord did not despise, for saving conversion often begins in less than this (so Zaccheus, Luke 19:3)....

45._The Galileans received him. _Whether or not this honor was of long duration we have not the means of determining; for there is nothing to which men are more prone than forgetfulness of the gifts of God. Nor does John relate this with any other design than to inform us that Christ performed miracles in presence of many witnesses, so that the report of them was spread far and wide. Again, this points out one advantage of miracles, that they prepare the way for doctrine; for they cause reverence to be paid to Christ....

43-54 The father was a nobleman, yet the son was sick. Honours and titles are no security from sickness and death. The greatest men must go themselves to God, must become beggars. The nobleman did not stop from his request till he prevailed. But at first he discovered the weakness of his faith in the power of Christ. It is hard to persuade ourselves that distance of time and place, are no hinderance to the knowledge, mercy, and power of our Lord Jesus. Christ gave an answer of peace. Christ's saying that the soul lives, makes it alive. The father went his way, which showed the sincerity of his faith. Being satisfied, he did not hurry home that night, but returned as one easy in his own mind. His servants met him with the news of the child's recovery. Verse 45. _THE GALILEANS RECEIVED HIM_] They received him as the promised _Messiah_, because of the miracles which they had seen him perform at Jerusalem, at the Passover. See John 2:23....

RECEIVED HIM - Received him kindly, or as a messenger of God. They had seen his miracles, and believed on him....

EXPOSITION JOHN 4:1 7. _The ministry and revelation of the Lord to those beyond the strict compass of the theocracy. _This passage describes an incident of consummate interest, and records a specimen of our Lord's intercourse with individuals, and the reaction of that instruction upon the disciples. The event is a solitary chink through which the light of historical fact falls upon an otherwise darkened and unknown period of the Saviour's life. When we skirt a forest we see at intervals, where by some accident of growth the light falls upon a narrow space, a miniature world of life and loveliness of every kind, suggesting what might happen if every square yard of the forest could receive a similar illumination. Every day of that wondrous life of Christ may have been equally full of meaning to some souls. "These things are written, that

That part of it in which Cana lay, as appears by what follows: THE GALILAEANS RECEIVED HIM; willingly, readily, and cheerfully, with much delight and pleasure, and with marks of great esteem and respect: they received him into their houses, and entertained him, and provided for him and his disciples: HAVING SEEN ALL THE THINGS THAT HE DID AT JERUSALEM, AT THE FEAST of the passover; the miracles he wrought there, see John 2:23; FOR THEY ALSO WENT UNTO THE FEAST; as well as Jesus and his disciples: they kept the feast of the passover, and went yearly to Jerusalem on that account: so Josephus speaks of the Galilaeans going to the Jewish festivals at Jerusalem, when he says c; "it was the custom, or usual with the Galilaeans, when they went to the holy city at the festivals, to go through th

THE WITNESS OF THE SAMARITANS AND THE RETURN TO GALILEE. The author records the effect of personal contact with Jesus on the men who come from the city. The expression, Saviour of the World, must come from the author, who uses the incident to emphasize the readiness of non-Jewish peoples to receive the Christ, and the superiority _of_ faith which rests on personal experience. Jesus, in spite of His success, stays only two days. His true work is in Galilee, His own country, where He is not likely to receive honours which at present would be dangerous....

WHEN HE WAS COME INTO GALILEE THE GALILEANS RECEIVED HIM. He had honor abroad in Galilee, though rejected at his own home. The ready reception of the Galileans is explained in the statement that they had seen all that he had done at the feast, his cleansing of the temple, and his miracles. John explains, for the benefit of Gentile readers, that "the Galileans also attended the feast," as was customary with all devout Israelites. The hearty reception of the Galileans is in striking contrast with the opposition of the priests, Levites and rulers of Jerusalem. This helps us to understand why Jesus spent so large. portion of his ministry in Galilee and selected Galileans for his apostles....
