DEFEAT AND DEATH OF THE FIVE KINGS. Here we have the account of the famous battle of Bethhoron. Five kings band themselves together against Gibeon; the Gibeonites send for help to Joshua, who comes upon the enemy suddenly and completely routs them. It is hardly necessary to say that the adjuration to the sun to stand still is purely poetical, and is to be compared with the words of Deborah's song, The stars in their courses fought against Sisera. The compiler of this book, however, took it as an actual prayer that was really granted, as is seen from the words, So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven. Flight and Execution of the Five Kings 16. _But these five kings_ Here the regular historical narrative is resumed. The second stage in the flight was over. "In the lengthened day granted to Joshua's prayer" now commences the third stage. _VER._ 22-25. _THEN SAID JOSHUA, OPEN THE MOUTH OF THE CAVE_— In full view of all his troops, now returned to the camp near Makkedah, and before his assaulting that place, Joshua caused the five kings to be brought forth out of the cavern, which had served as their prison all the while the action of that miraculous day continued. Next he commands his principal officers _to put their feet upon the necks of these kings:_ a rough and contemptuous treatment, but which God had, doubtless, enjoined him to use, in order to intimidate the Canaanites, by thus punishing them with the utmost rigour for their aggravated iniquity; to encourage the Israelites, and to accomplish gloriously what Moses had declared to them respecting their future prosperity. THE CONQUEST OF SOUTHERN CANAAN This chapter narrates the successful campaign against the five confederate chiefs of the S., who are roused by the fall of Jericho and Ai and the alliance with Gibeon, and combine under the leadership of Adonizedek of Jerusalem to retaliate upon the Gibeonites. Bringing succour, as in duty bound, to his new allies, Joshua encounters the confederate forces in Beth-horon. By divine aid he inflicts on them a signal defeat, captures and slays all five kings, and follows up his success by a prompt reduction of six Amorite strongholds in swift succession.
