Verse Joshua 10:36-6. _HEBRON - AND THE KING THEREOF_] See the note on Joshua 10:3. From Joshua 10:23 we learn that the king of Hebron was one of those _five_ whom Joshua slew and hanged on five trees at Makkedah. How then can it be said that he _slew the king of Hebron_ when he took the city, which was some days after the transactions at Makkedah? Either this slaying of the king of Hebron must refer to what had _already_ been done, or the Hebronites, finding that their king fell in battle, had set up _another_ in his place; which was the king Joshua slew, after he had taken the city and its dependencies, as is related...

_VER._ 36, 37. _AND-37 JOSHUA WENT UP FROM EGLON—UNTO HEBRON_— The king of Hebron was one of the five confederated against Israel. They must, therefore, have quickly appointed him a successor; and it was this successor whom Joshua _put to the sword._ With respect to Hebron itself, we have already more than once spoken of it in the history of Abraham. See Genesis 13:18. It fell to the tribe of Judah, and was situated among the mountains. All the towns in the district of _Hebron,_ which was the capital, and consequently figured among the principal cities of the country, were involved in the common fate.
