_THIS IS THE LAND THAT YET REMAINETH: ALL THE BORDERS OF THE PHILISTINES, AND ALL GESHURI,_ This is the land that yet remaineth - i:e., to be acquired. This section forms a parenthesis, in which the historian briefly notices the districts yet unsubdued-namely, first, all the borders of the Philistines. Verse Joshua 13:2. _THE BORDERS OF THE PHILISTINES, AND ALL GESHURI_] The borders of the Philistines may mean the land which they possessed on the sea-coast, southwest of the land of Canaan. There were several places named _Geshuri_, but that spoken of here was probably the region on the south of Canaan, towards Arabia, or towards Egypt. - _Calmet_. Cellarius supposes it to have been a country in the vicinity of the Amalekites....

This and Joshua 13:3 name the still unconquered districts in the southern half of the land, Joshua 13:4 those in the north. GESHURI - A district on the south of Philistia, the inhabitants of which are again named in 1 Samuel 27:8; but are not to be confounded with the land of the Geshurites mentioned in Joshua 13:13; Joshua 12:5....

EXPOSITION THE DIVISION OF THE TERRITORY.— JOSHUA 13:1 NOW JOSHUA WAS OLD. This is usually regarded as the second part of the Book of Joshua; the first being devoted to the history of the conquest of Palestine, while the second is engaged with the history of its division among the conquerors. Dean Stanley, in his 'Sinai and Palestine,' as well as in his 'Lectures on the History of the Jewish Church,' describes this portion of the Book of Judges as the 'Domes. day Book' of the land of Canaan, and the remark has been constantly repeated. JOSHUA 13. PARTS OF THE LAND AS YET UNCONQUERED. IN HERITANCE OF THE TWO AND A HALF TRIBES ON THE E. OF JORDAN. In Joshua 13:1 we meet with a statement which causes surprise. The whole land has been subdued (Joshua 11:23 to Joshua 12:24), yet now we read that even in Joshua's old age there remained very much land to be possessed.
