_FROM AROER, THAT IS UPON THE BANK OF THE RIVER ARNON, AND THE CITY THAT IS IN THE MIDST OF THE RIVER, AND ALL THE PLAIN OF MEDEBA UNTO DIBON;_ From Aroer, that is upon the bank of the river Arnon, and the city that is in the midst of the river. This city was situated on the north side of the river-the southern extremity of the country conquered by the Israelites-where its site is still traceable both in the modern name Ara'ir and from the head of ruins that mark the spot. But Aroer, like Rabbah, consisted of two portions, one on the bank and the other in the bed of the stream (cf. 2 Samuel 24:5). The writer appends to the command of God Joshua 13:1 a statement that the other two tribes and a half had already had their inheritance marked out for them by Moses in the land east of Jordan. The boundaries of this territory as a whole are first set forth Joshua 13:8, and afterward the portions assigned within it to the two tribes and a half are severally described Joshua 13:15. EXPOSITION THE DIVISION OF THE TERRITORY.— JOSHUA 13:1 NOW JOSHUA WAS OLD. This is usually regarded as the second part of the Book of Joshua; the first being devoted to the history of the conquest of Palestine, while the second is engaged with the history of its division among the conquerors. Dean Stanley, in his 'Sinai and Palestine,' as well as in his 'Lectures on the History of the Jewish Church,' describes this portion of the Book of Judges as the 'Domes. day Book' of the land of Canaan, and the remark has been constantly repeated. There is, however, a considerable difference between the great survey of the Conqueror and this one. The whole land has been subdued (Joshua 11:23 to Joshua 12:24), yet now we read that even in Joshua's old age there remained very much land to be possessed.
