_AND THEIR COAST WAS FROM MAHANAIM, ALL BASHAN, ALL THE KINGDOM OF OG KING OF BASHAN, AND ALL THE TOWNS OF JAIR, WHICH ARE IN BASHAN, THREESCORE CITIES:_ Their coast was from Mahanaim. The region occupied by the half tribe of Manasseh on the east of the Jordan was won by their own bravery, and confirmed to them by Moses (Numbers 32:39; Deuteronomy 33:13). 7-33 The land must be divided among the tribes. It is the will of God that every man should know his own, and not take that which is another's. The world must be governed, not by force, but right. Wherever our habitation is placed, and in whatever honest way our portion is assigned, we should consider them as allotted of God; we should be thankful for, and use them as such, while every prudent method should be used to prevent disputes about property, both at present and in future. Verse Joshua 13:30. _THE TOWNS OF JAIR_] These were sixty cities; they are mentioned afterwards, and in 1 Chronicles 2:21, c. They are the same with the _Havoth-jair_ mentioned Numbers 32:41. Jair was son of Segub, grandson of Esron or Hezron, and great-grandson of Machir by his grandmother's side, who married Hezron of the tribe of Judah. See his genealogy, 1 Chronicles 2:21-13....

The writer appends to the command of God Joshua 13:1 a statement that the other two tribes and a half had already had their inheritance marked out for them by Moses in the land east of Jordan. This is usually regarded as the second part of the Book of Joshua; the first being devoted to the history of the conquest of Palestine, while the second is engaged with the history of its division among the conquerors. Dean Stanley, in his 'Sinai and Palestine,' as well as in his 'Lectures on the History of the Jewish Church,' describes this portion of the Book of Judges as the 'Domes. day Book' of the land of Canaan, and the remark has been constantly repeated.
