Porter ('Handbook of Syria and Palestine, p. 310) thinks 'it is highly probable that Jebel Osh'a may be the Ramath-mizpeh (the heights of the watch-tower) referred to in this passage and Judges 11:1.' BETONIM - perhaps Batneh, in the vicinity of the former. AND FROM MAHANAIM (the two hosts, Genesis 32:1) - a town near the fords north of the Jabbok, on the border of the tribes Gad and Manasseh, and given to the Levites (Joshua 21:38).

7-33 The land must be divided among the tribes. It is the will of God that every man should know his own, and not take that which is another's. The world must be governed, not by force, but right. Verse Joshua 13:26. _RAMATH-MIZPEH_] The same as _Ramoth-gilead_. It was one of the cities of refuge, Joshua 20:8; Deuteronomy 4:47. _MAHANAIM_] Or the _two camps_. Situated on the northern side of the brook Jabbok, celebrated for the vision of the two camps of angels which Jacob had there; see Genesis 32:2....

The writer appends to the command of God Joshua 13:1 a statement that the other two tribes and a half had already had their inheritance marked out for them by Moses in the land east of Jordan. The boundaries of this territory as a whole are first set forth Joshua 13:8, and afterward the portions assigned within it to the two tribes and a half are severally described Joshua 13:15. This is usually regarded as the second part of the Book of Joshua; the first being devoted to the history of the conquest of Palestine, while the second is engaged with the history of its division among the conquerors.
