25._And Joshua said, _etc The invective seems excessively harsh; as if it had been his intention to drive the wretched man to frantic madness, when he ought rather to have exhorted him to patience. I have no doubt that he spoke thus for the sake of the people, in order to furnish a useful example to all, and my conclusion, therefore, is, that he did not wish to overwhelm Achan with despair, but only to show in his person how grievous a crime it is to disturb the Church of God. Verse Joshua 7:25. _WHY HAST THOU TROUBLED US?_] Here is a reference to the meaning of _Achan's_ or _Achar's_ name, מה עכרתנו _meh ACHAR-tanu_; and as עכר _achar_ is used here, and not עכן _achan_, and the valley is called the _valley of Achor_, and not the _valley of Achan_, hence some have supposed that _Achar_ was his proper name, as it is read 1 Chronicles 2:7, and in some MSS., and ancient versions. EXPOSITION THE DISCOVERY OF ACHAN'S SIN.— JOSHUA 7:16 THE FAMILY OF JUDAH. The expression מִשְׁפַתַת is remarkable. Many commentators would read מִשְׁפְחֹת, not without some MSS. authority. Keil objects that the Chaldee and Syriac have the singular. But the LXX. has κατὰ δήμους, and the Vulgate _juxta familias. _On the whole it seems more probable that as מִשְׁפַחַת occurs twice in this passage, it has been so pointed where the same letters occur for the third time, than that, with Peele, it means tribe (so also Gesenius and Winer); or that, as others suggest, it is used for _omnes _or _singulas genres. _See, however,...
