Verse Leviticus 15:11. _AND WHOMSOEVER HE TOUCHETH_] Here we find that the saliva, sitting on the same seat, lying on the same bed, riding on the same saddle, or simple contact, was sufficient to render the person _unclean_, meaning, _possibly_, in certain cases, to communicate the disorder; and it is well known that in all these ways the contagion of this disorder may be communicated. Is it not even possible that the effluvia from the body of an infected person may be the means of communicating the disease? Sydenham expressly says that it may be communicated by lactation, handling, the saliva, sweat, and by the breath itself, as well as by those grosser means of which there is no question. But the term _unclean_, in this and the following cases, is generally understood in a mere _legal_ sense, the rendering a person _unfit_ for sacred ordinances...

EXPOSITION RUNNING ISSUES FROM THE HUMAN BODY. These are the fourth cause of ceremonial uncleanness. DISCHARGES FROM MALES. These are evidently regarded as abnormal. The greatest care is taken to mark the contagion arising from them. Keener precautions could not be taken with what is the most loathsome disease of our modern civilisation. The bed, the seat, anyone who has touched the bed or the seat or the afflicted person himself, or has been touched by his saliva, is infected. In each case of infection, washing and seclusion for the rest of the day is prescribed; wooden vessels are to be rinsed, earthenware (_cf. Leviticus 6:28_, Leviticus 11:33) to be destroyed. The infected person himself, however, when free, is simply to wait for a week, wash his clothes and his body in running water; on the next day he offers a sin offering and a burnt offering in resuming his intercourse with holy things.

UNCLEANNESS CONNECTED WITH SEXUAL DISCHARGES The subject of this chapter is related to that of Leviticus 12 : see intro. there.
