_SPEAK UNTO THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL, AND SAY UNTO THEM, WHEN ANY MAN HATH A RUNNING ISSUE OUT OF HIS FLESH, BECAUSE OF HIS ISSUE HE IS UNCLEAN._ When any man hath a running issue. This chapter describes other forms of uncleanness, the nature of which is sufficiently intelligible in the text, without any explanatory comment. Whether proceeding from natural causes or from disease, they properly came within the notice of the legislator; and the very stringent rules here prescribed, both for the separation of the person so affected, and for avoiding contamination from anything connected with him, were well calculated not only to prevent contagion, but to discourage the excesses of licentious indulgence....

2_When any man hath a running issue. _He here alludes to other species of contamination, for which a solemn purification is required. And, first, he teaches that men are defiled by the flow of the seminal fluid, which occurs in two ways, either when it involuntarily bursts out in sleep, or when it escapes gradually in the disease, which the Greeks call γονόρ᾿ῥοια This Supplement might, as I have said, be appended to the Seventh Commandment, because every (17) indisposition arising from lust appears here to be condemned; but, if we look more closely, we shall perceive that it is a general law for the cultivation of purity, and which must _not _be confined to chastity alone. Verse Leviticus 15:2. _WHEN ANY MAN HATH A RUNNING ISSUE_] The cases of natural uncleanness, both of men and women, mentioned in this chapter, taken in a theological point of view, are not of such importance to us as to render a particular description necessary, the letter of the text being, in general, plain enough. The disease mentioned in the former part of this chapter appears to _some_ to have been either the consequence of a very bad infection, or of some criminal indulgence; for they find that it might be _communicated_ in a variety of ways, which they imagine are here distinctly specified. On this ground the person was declared _unclean_, and all commerce and connection with him strictly forbidden. The Septuagint version renders הזב _hazzab_, the man with the _issue_, by ὁ γονορῥυης, the man with a gonorrhoea, no less than nine times in this chap...

EXPOSITION RUNNING ISSUES FROM THE HUMAN BODY. These are the fourth cause of ceremonial uncleanness. We are not to look for a moral basis for the regulation on account of any vicious habit connected with such issues. They are foul and repulsive, and simply for that reason they are causes of ceremonial uncleanness to those who suffer from them, and to those who crone in contact with persons suffering from them. The issues mentioned were therefore an evidence of the presence of sin in man's nature with the curse upon it, and constitutes man and woman unclean in the sight of God. “Not only actions, from which we can abstain, but operations of nature which we cannot help, alike defile; defile in such a manner and degree as to require, even as voluntary acts of sin, the cleansing of water and the expiatory blood of a sin offering. DISCHARGES FROM MALES. These are evidently regarded as abnormal. The greatest care is taken to mark the contagion arising from them. Keener precautions could not be taken with what is the most loathsome disease of our modern civilisation. The bed, the seat, anyone who has touched the bed or the seat or the afflicted person himself, or has been touched by his saliva, is infected. In each case of infection, washing and seclusion for the rest of the day is prescribed; wooden vessels are to be rinsed, earthenware (_cf. Leviticus 6:28_, Leviticus 11:33) to be destroyed. The infected person himself, however, when free, is simply to wait for a week, wash his clothes and his body in running water; on the next day he offers a sin offering and a burnt offering in resuming his intercourse with holy things.

The Uncleanness of Issues and their Cleansing _As regards men_(1 18) 2. _an issue out of his flesh_ by flesh is here meant the private parts, as in Leviticus 6:10; Leviticus 16:4. Everything which a man in this condition touched was unclean, so that anyone coming in contact with the man, or with anything that he had touched, must wash his clothes and bathe himself in water, and was not considered purified until the evening....
