_AND HE SHALL TAKE OF THE CONGREGATION OF THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL TWO KIDS OF THE GOATS FOR A SIN OFFERING, AND ONE RAM FOR A BURNT OFFERING._ Shall take of the congregation ... two kids of the goats ... and one ram. The sacrifices were to be offered by the high priest respectively for himself and the other priests, as well as for the people. The bullock (Leviticus 16:3) and the goats were for sin offerings, and the rams for burnt offerings. The goats, though used in different ways, constituted only one offering. Verse Leviticus 16:8. _AARON SHALL CAST LOTS UPON THE TWO GOATS_] The Jews inform us that there were two _lots_ made either of _wood, stone_, or any kind of _metal_. On one was written לשם LASHSHEM, _for the_ NAME, i. e., יהוה JEHOVAH, which the Jews will neither write nor pronounce: on the other was written לעזאזל LAAZAZEL, for the SCAPE-GOAT: then they put the two lots into a vessel which was called קלפי _kalpey_, the goats standing with their faces towards the west. The two goats formed a single sin-offering, Leviticus 16:5. To bring out the meaning of the sacrifice it was necessary that the act of a living being should be performed after death. See Leviticus 16:22 note. As this could not possibly be visibly set forth with a single victim, two were employed, as in the case of the birds in the rite for the healed leper Leviticus 14:4. ATONEMENT RITE FOR HIGH PRIEST AND HIS FAMILY. The holy place within the veil, _i.e._ the inner of the two compartments of the shrine, is not to be entered at will, but only on New Year's Day (Leviticus 16:29). Otherwise the intruder would be killed by the Shekinah which dwelt there in solitary majesty. FOR THE SCAPEGOAT. Hebrew for _'Azazel_. This "for" looks like. personality answering to "for Jehovah". If it be the Evil one who is meant, then it is for his defiance. For in Leviticus 16:10 atonement is made for this goat, and he is to go free. Where there is atonement there must be forgiveness. See note on Leviticus 16:22 below....
