1-13 The consecration of Aaron and his sons had been delayed until the tabernacle had been prepared, and the laws of the sacrifices given. Aaron and his sons were washed with water, to signify that they ought to purify themselves from all sinful dispositions, and ever after to keep themselves pure. Christ washes those from their sins in his own blood whom he makes kings and priests to our God, Revelation 1:5; Revelation 1:6; and those that draw near to God must be washed in pure water, Hebrews 10:22. Nothing is said here, or in Exodus 29:7, of the anointing of the common priests, though it is expressly commanded in Exodus 28:41; Exodus 40:15, and is evidently implied as a fact in Leviticus 7:36; Leviticus 10:7; Numbers 3:3. Aaron's sons are clothed with tunics, sashes, and caps. The tunics and sashes are not described; whether they were less elaborate than those of the high priest does not appear, but is probable. The caps (_headtires_R.V., _bonnets_A.V.) were of fine linen (Exodus 39:28), and the Heb. word is used only of the head-gear of the ordinary priests. The description of Josephus (_Ant._iii. 7. 3) is not very clear. See on Leviticus 8:9, and the note on Exodus 28:40....

AND MOSES DID AS THE LORD COMMANDED HIM, &C.— Aaron and his sons are consecrated. The people are called to the door of the tabernacle to grace the solemnity, and by their prayers to implore the Divine benediction. Moses, according to God's directions, proceeds in the consecration: he first washes them. They who are to preach the efficacy of the blood of Christ must first themselves be washed by it, and shew by their own examples the purity they teach. Aaron is clothed with the beautiful garments and diadem, and anointed with the holy oil, as is also the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the sanctuary. _Note:_ 1.
