Leviticus 8:6

_AND MOSES BROUGHT AARON AND HIS SONS, AND WASHED THEM WITH WATER._ Moses ... washed them with water. A summary account of this ceremony is given, Exodus 40:11. At consecration they were subjected to entire ablution, though on ordinary occasions they were required, before entering on their duties, only to wash their hands and feet. This symbolical ablution was designed to teach them the necessity of inward purity, and the imperative obligation on those who bore the vessels and conducted the services of the sanctuary to be holy....

1-13 The consecration of Aaron and his sons had been delayed until the tabernacle had been prepared, and the laws of the sacrifices given. Aaron and his sons were washed with water, to signify that they ought to purify themselves from all sinful dispositions, and ever after to keep themselves pure. Christ washes those from their sins in his own blood whom he makes kings and priests to our God, Revelation 1:5; Revelation 1:6; and those that draw near to God must be washed in pure water, Hebrews 10:22. The anointing of Aaron was to typify the anointing of Christ with the Spirit, which was not given by measure to him. All believers have received the anointing....

WASHED THEM WITH WATER - Moses caused them to bathe entirely (compare Leviticus 16:4), not merely to wash their hands and feet, as they were to do in their daily ministrations. See the marginal reference. This bathing, which the high priest had also to go through on the day of atonement, was symbolic of the spiritual cleansing required of all 2 Corinthians 7:1, but especially of those who had to draw near to God to make reconciliation for the sins of the people Hebrews 7:26; Matthew 3:15....

The sacrificial system, which had now been instituted in its completeness, required a priesthood to administer it. AND MOSES DID AS THE LORD COMMANDED HIM, &C.— Aaron and his sons are consecrated. The people are called to the door of the tabernacle to grace the solemnity, and by their prayers to implore the Divine benediction. Moses, according to God's directions, proceeds in the consecration: he first washes them. They who are to preach the efficacy of the blood of Christ must first themselves be washed by it, and shew by their own examples the purity they teach. Aaron is clothed with the beautiful garments and diadem, and anointed with the holy oil, as is also the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the sanctuary. _Note:_ 1.
