'This stands for "palace" (says Olshausen), a great pile surrounded with forecourts and halls.' Meyer repudiates this sense, contending for the primary meaning of the word, an open 'court....

Luke 11:30._As Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites. _He declares that he will be _a sign _to them, as _Jonah _was to the inhabitants of Nineveh. But the word _sign _is not taken in its ordinary sense, as pointing out something, but as denoting what is widely removed from the ordinary course of nature. In this sense Jonah’s mission was miraculous, when he was brought out of the belly of the fish, as if from the grave, to call _the Ninevites _to repentance. _Three days and three nights _This is in accordance with a well-known figure of speech. (166) As the _night _is an appendage to the _day, _or rather, as the day consists of two parts, light and darkness, he expresses a day by a day and a night, and where there was half a day, he puts down a whole day....

29-36 Christ promised that there should be one sign more given, even the sign of Jonah the prophet; which in Matthew is explained, as meaning the resurrection of Christ; and he warned them to improve this sign. But though Christ himself were the constant preacher in any congregation, and worked miracles daily among them, yet unless his grace humbled their hearts, they would not profit by his word. Let us not desire more evidence and fuller teaching than the Lord is pleased to afford us. We should pray without ceasing that our hearts and understandings may be opened, that we may profit by the light we enjoy. And especially take heed that the light which is in us be not darkness; for if our leading principles be wrong, our judgment and practice must become more so....

But some of them said, He casteth out devils through Beelzebub the chief of the devils._ One would hardly have thought that they could have gone to such a length as that; but when men hate Christ, there is nothing they will not say against him. It is no subject of surprise when great heresies arise, for they are the natural outcome of human enmity against Christ and his truth. People in such a state of heart will say anything; they will give utterance to thoughts that you could not have imagined would have entered any human brain; it is the enmity of the heart to Christ that produces this blasphemy of the tongue.
