6-12 All our sicknesses and calamities spring from the anger of God against our sins. Their removal, or the making them blessings to us, was purchased to us by the blood of Christ. But the plagues and diseases of our souls, of our hearts, are chiefly to be dreaded; and He can heal them also by a word. May more and more press to Christ to be healed of these plagues, and to be delivered from the enemies of their souls....

Verse Mark 3:11. _THOU ART THE SON OF GOD._] Two MSS., and the later _Syriac_, have, _Thou art the Christ, the Son of God_. One of Stephens's MSS. has, _Thou art the Holy One of God_. A MS. in the library of Leicester has, συ ει ὁ Θεος, υἱος, _Thou art_ GOD, _the_ _Son_. This is an uncommon reading, which is not confirmed by any MS. yet discovered....

UNCLEAN SPIRITS - Persons who were possessed of evil spirits. THOU ART THE SON OF GOD - The Son of God, by way of eminence. In this place it is equivalent to the Messiah, who was, among the Jews, called the Son of God. Hence, they were charged not to make him known, because he was not desirous that it should be blazoned abroad that he claimed to be the Messiah. He had not yet done what he wished in order to establish his claims to the Messiahship. He was poor and unhonored, and the claim would be treated as that of an impostor. “For the present,” therefore, he did not wish that it should be proclaimed abroad that he was the Messiah. The circumstance here referred to demonstrates the existence of evil spirits. EXPOSITION This chapter begins with the record of another case of healing on the sabbath day; and it closes with the notice of a combination of the Pharisees with the Herodians to bring about the destruction of the Saviour. We may observe that he again chose the sabbath for a new miracle, that he might again and again confute the error of the scribes and Pharisees with regard to the observance of the sabbath. MARK 3:1 HE ENTERED AGAIN INTO THE SYNAGOGUE. St. Matthew (Matthew 12:9) says, "their synagogue" (εἰς τὴν συναγωγὴν) This would probably be on the next sabbath after that named at the close of the last chapter. An editorial paragraph descriptive of the new development in the ministry. It is made up of popular generalizations, from which we gather that Jesus had to protect Himself against growing crowds by retiring from the cities to the sea-shore, and by securing a boat as a shelter. His work of healing and exorcism continues, the confessions of the demons becoming more explicit (see Swete on the phrases Son of God, Mark 3:11, and Holy One of God, Mark 1:24). The work of healing is itself a message of forgiveness (Mark 2:1 *) for the diseases healed are described as plagues, a word used in OT of Divine chastisement (see HNT and Swete).
