Mark 3:5._And when he had looked around upon them with indignation _To convince us that this was a just and holy anger, Mark explains the reason of it to be, that he was _grieved on account of the blindness of their hearts. _First, then, Christ _is grieved, _because men who have been instructed in the Law of God are so grossly _blind; _but as it was malice that _blinded _them, his _grief _is accompanied by _indignation. _This is the true moderation of zeal, to be distressed about the destruction of wicked men, and, at the same time, to be filled with wrath at their ungodliness. Again, as this passage assures us, that Christ was not free from human passions, we infer from it, that the passions themselves are not sinful, provided there be no excess. Verse Mark 3:5. _WITH ANGER, BEING GRIEVED FOR THE HARDNESS OF THEIR_ _hearts_] These words are not found in any of the other evangelists. For πωρωσει _hardness_, or rather _callousness_, the _Codex Bezae_, and four of the _Itala_, read νεκρωσει, _deadness_; the _Vulgate_ and some of the _Itala, caecitate, blindness_. Join all these together, and they will scarcely express the fulness of this people's wretchedness. EXPOSITION This chapter begins with the record of another case of healing on the sabbath day; and it closes with the notice of a combination of the Pharisees with the Herodians to bring about the destruction of the Saviour. We may observe that he again chose the sabbath for a new miracle, that he might again and again confute the error of the scribes and Pharisees with regard to the observance of the sabbath. THE SABBATH HEALING WHICH DETERMINED PHARISAIC HOSTILITY. (See p. 666.) Mk. links this synagogue incident with his first (Mark 1:21) by the word again. Jesus is no longer unknown; He is suspect.
