Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city. VERILY I SAY UNTO YOU, IT SHALL BE MORE TOLERABLE (MORE BEARABLE), FOR SODOM AND GOMORRHA IN THE DAY OF JUDGMENT, THAN FOR THAT CITY. Those cities of the plain, which were given to the flames for their loathsome impurities, shall be treated as less criminal, we are here taught, than those places which, though morally respectable, reject the Gospel message and affront these that bear it....

_Verily, I say to you _That they may not imagine this to be an idle bugbear, (578) Christ declares that those who reject the gospel, will receive more severe punishment than the inhabitants of Sodom. Some view the word _judgment _as referring to the destruction of Jerusalem. But this is foreign to our Lord’s intention: for it must be understood as referring to the _general judgment, _in which both must give their account, that there may be a comparison of the punishments. Christ mentioned _Sodom _rather than other cities, not only because it went beyond them all in flagitious crimes, but because God destroyed it in an extraordinary manner, that it might serve as an example to all ages, and that its very name might be held in abomination. And we need not wonder if Christ declares that they will be treated less severely than those who refuse to hear the gospel. When men deny the authority...

5-15 The Gentiles must not have the gospel brought them, till the Jews have refused it. This restraint on the apostles was only in their first mission. Wherever they went they must proclaim, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. They preached, to establish the faith; the kingdom, to animate the hope; of heaven, to inspire the love of heavenly things, and the contempt of earthly; which is at hand, that men may prepare for it without delay. Christ gave power to work miracles for the confirming of their doctrine. This is not necessary now that the kingdom of God is come. It showed that the intent of the doctrine they preached, was to heal sick souls, and to raise those that were dead in sin. Verse Matthew 10:15. _IN THE DAY OF JUDGMENT_] Or, _punishment_, - κρισεως. Perhaps not meaning _the day_ of _general judgment_, nor the day of the _destruction of the Jewish state_ by the _Romans_; but _a_ day in which God should send _punishment_ on that particular city, or on that person, for their crimes. So the _day of judgment_ of _Sodom_ _and Gomorrah_, was the time in which the Lord destroyed them by fire and brimstone, from the Lord out of heaven. If men are thus treated for not receiving the preachers of the Gospel, what will it be to despise the _Gospel_ itself - to decry it - to preach the contrary - to hinder the preaching of it - to abuse those who do preach it in its purity - or to render it fruitless by calumnies and lies! Their _punishment_, our Lord intimates, shall be greater than that
