8._Cure the diseased _As he has bestowed on them power, so he enjoins them to be faithful and liberal in dispensing it, and charges them not to suppress that power, which had been lodged with them for the common benefit of all. By those miracles he shows why he was sent by the Father, and what was the design of his Gospel. It is not without design that he enjoins them to _raise the dead _and _heal the sick, _instead of bringing diseases on the healthy and inflicting death on the living. Verse Matthew 10:8. _RAISE THE DEAD_] This is wanting in the MSS. marked EKLMS of _Griesbach_, and in those marked BHV of _Mathai_, and in upwards of _one hundred_ others. It is also wanting in the _Syriac_, (Vienna edition,) latter _Persic, Sahidic, Armenian, Sclavonic_, and in one copy of the _Itala_; also in _Athanasius, Basil_, and _Chrysostom_. There is no evidence that the disciples raised any dead person previously to the resurrection of Christ. The words should certainly be omitted, unless we could suppose that the authority now given respected not only their present mission, but comprehended also their future conduct. But that our blessed Lord did not give this power to his disciples _at this time_, is, I think, pretty evident from Matthew 10:1,...

FREELY YE HAVE RECEIVED, FREELY GIVE - That is, they were not to sell their favors of healing, preaching, etc. They were not to make a money-making business of it, to bargain specifically to heal for so much, and to cast out devils for so much.
