Matthew 19:23._A rich man will with difficulty enter. _Christ warns them, not only how dangerous and how deadly a plague avarice is, but also how great an obstacle is presented by riches. In Mark, indeed, he mitigates the harshness of his expression, by restricting it to those only _who place confidence in riches _But these words are, I think, intended to confirm, rather than correct, the former statement, as if he had affirmed that they ought not to think it strange, that he made the _entrance into the kingdom of heaven so difficult for the rich, _because it is an evil almost common to all to _trust in their riches _Yet this doctrine is highly useful to all; to _the rich_, that, being warned of their danger, they may be on their guard; to the poor, that, satisfied with their lot, they may not so eagerly desire what would bring more damage than gain. Verse Matthew 19:23. _A RICH MAN SHALL HARDLY ENTER_] That is, into the _spirit_ and _privileges_ of the _Gospel_ in _this world_, and through them into the _kingdom of glory_. Earthly riches are a great obstacle to salvation; because it is almost impossible to possess them, and not to set the heart upon them; and they who love the world have not the love of the Father in them. 1 John 2:15. To be rich, therefore, is in general a great misfortune: but what rich man can be convinced of this? It is only God himself who, by a miracle of mercy, can do this. Christ himself affirms the difficulty of the salvation of a rich man, with an oath, _verily_; but who of the rich either hears or believes him!...

This account is found also in Mark 10:17; Luke 18:18. Matthew 19:16 ONE CAME - This was a young man, Matthew 19:20. He was a ruler (Luke); probably a ruler in a synagogue, or of the great council of the nation; a place to which he was chosen on account of his unblemished character and promising talents.
