While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, For the exposition, see the notes at Mark 12:35. For this long and terrible discourse we are indebted, with the exception of a few verses in Mark and Luke, to Matthew alone. But as it is only an extended repetition of denunciations uttered not long before at the table of a Pharisee, and recorded by Luke (Luke 11:37), we may take both together in the exposition....

44._The _Lord _said to my Lord. _Here the Holy Spirit puts into the mouth of all the godly a song of triumph, that they may boldly defy Satan and all the ungodly, and mock at their rage, when they endeavor to drive Christ from his throne. That they may not hesitate or tremble, when they perceive great emotions produced in the earth, they are commanded to place the holy and inviolable decree of God in opposition to all the exertions of adversaries. The meaning therefore is: whatever may be the madness of men, all that they shall dare to contrive will be of no avail for destroying the kingdom of Christ, which has been set up, not by the will of men, but by the appointment of God, and therefore is supported by everlasting strength. Whenever this kingdom is violently attacked, let us call to remembrance this revelation from heaven; for undoubtedly this promise was put into the hand of Christ...

41-46 When Christ baffled his enemies, he asked what thoughts they had of the promised Messiah? How he could be the Son of David and yet his Lord? He quotes Psalms 110:1. If the Christ was to be a mere man, who would not exist till many ages after David's death, how could his forefather call him Lord? The Pharisees could not answer it. Nor can any solve the difficulty except he allows the Messiah to be the Son of God, and David's Lord equally with the Father. He took upon him human nature, and so became God manifested in the flesh; in this sense he is the Son of man and the Son of David. It behoves us above all things seriously to inquire, "What think we of Christ?" Is he altogether glorious in our eyes, and precious to our hearts? May Christ be our joy, our confidence, our all. May we daily be made more like to him, and more devoted to his service....

Verse Matthew 22:44. _THE LORD_ (יהוה Yeve OR _JEHOVAH_) _SAID UNTO MY_ _LORD_, (אדניע Adni OR _ADONAI_, MY _PROP, STAY, MASTER_, _SUPPORT_), _SIT THOU ON MY RIGHT HAND_] Take the place of the greatest eminence and authority. _Till I make thine enemies thy_ _footstool _- till I subdue both Jews and Gentiles under thee, and cause them to acknowledge thee as their _sovereign_ and _Lord_. This quotation is taken from Psalms 110:1; and, from it, these two points are clear: 1. That David wrote it by the inspiration of God; and 2. That it is a prophetic declaration of the _Messiah_....
