Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me. THEN SAID JESUS UNTO THEM, BE NOT AFRAID. What dear associations would these familiar words-now uttered in a higher style, but by the same Lips-bring rushing back to their recollection! GO TELL MY BRETHREN THAT THEY GO INTO GALILEE, AND THERE SHALL THEY SEE ME. The brethren here meant must have been His brethren after the flesh (); because His brethren in the higher sense (see the note at ) had several meetings with Him at Jerusalem before he went to Galilee, which they would have missed if they had been the persons ordered to Galilee to meet Him. 10._Then Jesus saith to them. _We conclude, that it was an improper _fear, _from which Christ again delivers them; for though it arose out of admiration, still it was opposed to the tranquillity of faith. That they may raise themselves to Christ, the Conqueror of death, they are commanded to be cheerful. (308) But by those words we are taught that we never know aright our Lord’s resurrection, until, through the firm assurance which we have conceived in our hearts, we venture to rejoice that we have been made partakers of the same life. Our faith ought, at least, to proceed so far that fear shall not predominate. _Go, tell my brethren. _When Christ ordered them to _tell _this to the disciples, by this message he again collected and raised up the Church, which was scattered and fallen down. 9,10 God's gracious visits usually meet us in the way of duty; and to those who use what they have for others' benefit, more shall be given. This interview with Christ was unexpected; but Christ was nigh them, and still is nigh us in the word. The salutation speaks the good-will of Christ to man, even since he entered upon his state of exaltation. It is the will of Christ that his people should be a cheerful, joyful people, and his resurrection furnishes abundant matter for joy. Be not afraid. Christ rose from the dead, to silence his people's fears, and there is enough in that to silence them. The disciples had just before shamefully deserted him in his sufferings; but, to show that he could forgive, and to teach us to do so, he calls them brethren. Notwithstanding his majesty and purity, and our meanness and unworthiness, he still condescends to call believers his brethren....

Verse Matthew 28:10. _BE NOT AFRAID_] They were seized with fear at the sight of the angel; and this was now renewed by this unexpected appearance of Christ. Matthew 28:8, Matthew 28:8. _GO, TELL MY BRETHREN_] This is the _first_ time our Lord called his disciples by this endearing name: they no doubt thought that their Lord would reproach them with their past cowardice and infidelity; but, in speaking thus, he gives them a full assurance, in the most tender terms, that all that was passed was as buried for ever....

BE NOT AFRAID - The ancients, when in the presence of a heavenly being - an angel, or one who was supposed to be possessed of divine power were commonly struck with great “fear,” as well as a great sense of their unworthiness. See Luke 5:8; Judges 6:22; Judges 13:21. These women were in like manner alarmed when they saw Jesus, believing him now especially to be a Divine Being; seeing him returning from the regions of the dead, and doubtless impressed with a new consciousness that they were unworthy of being in his presence. Matthew 28:1. _In the end of the Sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulcher. And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it._ See what concern angels have about our Lord. Are they here tonight? Do they make a habit of coming where the saints meet together? I think they do. We have intimations in Scripture that that is the case. Let us behave ourselves aright tonight «because of the angels»; and as they worship and count it their highest honour to serve the Son of man, let us also worship Jesus, and adore him. (Matthew 28:16 .)_ We have reached the last portion of our Gospel. The end is brief and very abrupt. The account of the resurrection of the Lord as given by Matthew is the briefest of all the Gospels. Only a few of the facts are mentioned. Then the characteristic feature of this last chapter is that no mention is made of the ascension of the Lord. However, the fact of His ascension is implied in numerous places in the Gospel. THE EMPTY TOMB (Mark 16:1 *, Luke 24:1). Mt. is here not so close to Mk., except in Matthew 28:5. The note of time in Matthew 28:1 is not clear; the Sab bath would end at sunset on Saturday. BEGAN TO DAWN ought perhaps to be rendered drew on (_cf._ Luke 23:54 * and _mg.)._ In this case Mt. describes a resurrection on Saturday evening. (See Allen, Comm. on Mk., pp. 188- 190.) He mentions only the two Maries (omitting Salome), and says nothing about their desire to anoint the body: the sealed and guarded tomb prevented this. None of the Gospels record
