He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. HE IS NOT HERE; FOR HE IS RISEN, AS HE SAID. See the notes at Luke 24:5. 'Come, see the spot where the Lord of glory lay: now it is an empty grave: He lies not, but He lay there. Come, feast your eyes on it!' But see the note at John 20:12; and Remarks below....

1-8 Christ rose the third day after his death; that was the time he had often spoken of. On the first day of the first week God commanded the light to shine out of darkness. On this day did He who is the Light of the world, shine out of the darkness of the grave; and this day is from henceforward often mentioned in the New Testament, as the day which Christians religiously observed in solemn assemblies, to the honour of Christ. Our Lord Jesus could have rolled back the stone by his own power, but he chose to have it done by an angel. The resurrection of Christ, as it is the joy of his friends, so it is the terror and confusion of his enemies. The angel encouraged the women against their fears. Let the sinners in Zion be afraid. Fear not ye, for his resurrection will be your consolation. Our communion with him must be spiritual, by faith in his word. When we are ready to make this world...

Verse Matthew 28:6. _COME, SEE THE PLACE_] The tomb in which our Lord was laid was no doubt like the rest of the Jewish burying places, a receptacle for the several dead of a whole family, divided into separate _niches_, where each had his _place_. _Come and see the_ _place _- was tantamount to, Come and see the niche in which he was laid - it is now empty; nor was there any other body in the place, for the tomb was a _new_ one, in which no man had ever been laid, John 19:41; so there could be no deception in the case....

HE HAS RISEN, AS HE SAID - Jesus had often predicted that he would rise, but the disciples did not understand it, and consequently did not expect it, Matthew 16:21; Matthew 20:19. THE PLACE WHERE THE LORD LAY - The place where a body was deposited in a sepulchre was commonly a niche cut in the wall of the sepulchre. The sepulchre was usually large; that of David was mere than 100 feet in length, cut out of solid rock under ground, and separated into various apartments. All round the sides of those apartments were niches for the dead; or they were ranged around the sides, in places cut in the solid rock just large enough to contain the body. In such a place, probably, our Lord lay....

EXPOSITION MATTHEW 28:1 _Jesus rises from the dead, and appears to the holy women. _(Mark 16:1; Luke 24:1; John 20:1.) It is to be noted that there are great and important variations in the four (or, with St. Paul's, 1 Corinthians 15:1., the five) accounts of the events of the Resurrection, which have given welcome occasion to the sceptic to cast doubts upon the whole transaction. HE IS NOT HERE,.... In the grave, where he was laid, and these women saw him laid: he was dead, but is now alive; he was laid in the grave, but God would not leave him there, nor suffer him to see corruption: FOR HE IS RISEN, AS HE SAID; not stolen away, as the chief priests hired the soldiers to say he was; nor removed to another place, as Mary Magdalene first thought, when she found him gone; but he was risen from the dead, by the power of his Father, and by his own power, as he had before said he should. In one of Beza's exemplars it is added, "to you"; for the words that Christ said in Galilee, that he should be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and rise again, the third day, were said in the presence and hearing of these women, and to them, as well as to the disciples; see Luke 24:6. This clause is left out in the Persic version: it follows,...

Matthew 28:1. _In the end of the Sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulcher. And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it._ See what concern angels have about our Lord. Are they here tonight? Do they make a habit of coming where the saints meet together? I think they do. We have intimations in Scripture that that is the case. Let us behave ourselves aright tonight «because of the angels»; and as they worship and count it their highest honour to serve the Son of man, let us also worship Jesus, and adore him. (Matthew 28:16 .)_ We have reached the last portion of our Gospel. The end is brief and very abrupt. The account of the resurrection of the Lord as given by Matthew is the briefest of all the Gospels. Only a few of the facts are mentioned. Then the characteristic feature of this last chapter is that no mention is made of the ascension of the Lord. However, the fact of His ascension is implied in numerous places in the Gospel. THE EMPTY TOMB (Mark 16:1 *, Luke 24:1). Mt. is here not so close to Mk., except in Matthew 28:5. The note of time in Matthew 28:1 is not clear; the Sab bath would end at sunset on Saturday. BEGAN TO DAWN ought perhaps to be rendered drew on (_cf._ Luke 23:54 * and _mg.)._ In this case Mt. describes a resurrection on Saturday evening. (See Allen, Comm. on Mk., pp. 188- 190.) He mentions only the two Maries (omitting Salome), and says nothing about their desire to anoint the body: the sealed and guarded tomb prevented this. None of the Gospels record
