_ALSO IN THE DAY OF THE FIRSTFRUITS, WHEN YE BRING A NEW MEAT OFFERING UNTO THE LORD, AFTER YOUR WEEKS BE OUT, YE SHALL HAVE AN HOLY CONVOCATION; YE SHALL DO NO SERVILE WORK:_ In the day of the first-fruits ... offer the burnt offering. A new sacrifice is ordered for the celebration of this festival, in addition to the other offering, which was to accompany the first-fruits (Leviticus 23:18). The "feast of weeks" is here called "the day of the first-fruits," because at that time were offered the first of their second or wheat harvest; hence, it is called "the feast of harvest" (Exodus 23:16), and also, in a later age, Pentecost, from its being celebrated 50 days after the Passover....

16-31 By the sacrifices enjoined in this chapter, we are reminded of the continued power of the sacrifice of Christ, and of our continual need to depend thereon. No hurrying employments, or perilous situations, or prosperous circumstances, should cause slackness in our religious exercises; but should rather stir us up to greater diligence in seeking help from, or giving thanks to the Lord. And all is to be accompanied with repentance, faith is the Lord Jesus, and love to him, and to produce true holiness in our conduct towards all men; otherwise God will abhor our most solemn services and abundant devotions. And Christ is able to supply the wants of every day, every week, every month, every year, every ordinance, every case....

The festival offering at the season of first-fruits was to be offered on one day only; and was the same with that of the new moon and Passover. It nearly though not entirely accords with the sacrificial offering prescribed in Leviticus 23:18 ff....

EXPOSITION THE ROUTINE OF SACRIFICIAL OFFERINGS (Numbers 28:1, Numbers 29:1). NUMBERS 28:1 THE LORD SPAKE UNTO MOSES. It is impossible to say with any assurance whether the law of offerings contained in these two chapters was really given to Moses shortly before his death, or whether it was ever given in this connected and completed form. It is obvious that the formula with which the section opens might be used with equal propriety to introduce a digest of the law on this subject compiled by Moses himself, or by some subsequent editor of his writings from a number of scattered reg

Ver. 27-30. BUT YE SHALL OFFER THE BURNT OFFERING FOR A SWEET SAVOUR UNTO THE LORD,.... Which was of the same kind, and was of the same number of creatures as on the first day of the month, and on the seven days of unleavened bread, Numbers 28:11, and the meat offering which went along with this was of the same quantity of flour to each creature as in the above mentioned sacrifices; and on this day also was offered a kid of the goats for a sin offering; and there were also peace offerings which are not mentioned here, nor is there any mention of any in the whole chapter; see Leviticus 23:19....

NUMBERS 28-29. THE NATURE AND AMOUNT OF THE OFFERINGS REQUIRED ON VARIOUS HOLY DAYS. The quantities prescribed for special festivals did not exhaust all the sacrifices offered upon them: on every festival the special sacrifices were supplemented by the daily offerings; on the first of the seventh month the distinctive offerings were supplemented by the offerings required for the first of each ordinary month; whilst on the tenth of the seventh month the sin offering of atonement (Leviticus 16) was supplementary to the other sacrifices here enjoined. TWO YOUNG BULLOCKS, &C.— The reader may observe, that here are _two bullocks, one ram, and seven lambs,_ required to be offered at this feast of Pentecost, or weeks; whereas in Leviticus 23:18 only _one bullock,_ and _two rams,_ and _seven lambs_ are required; which difference is thus reconciled; these sacrifices, here specified, of two bullocks, a ram, and seven lambs, with their meat and drink-offerings, together with a kid of atonement, being precisely the same which are above prescribed upon the monthly festivals, and on the days of unleavened bread, are thought to be additional sacrifices, over and above those, which were before appointed to be offered with the two loaves of bread in Leviticus 23:17.
