Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins. HATRED STIRRETH UP STRIFES: BUT LOVE COVERETH ALL SINS. "Stirreth up" - literally, as one lifting up a spear which before had been at rest. So the Hebrew [ `owreer (H5782)] in 2 Samuel 23:18. So hatred disturbs the existing quiet by railings; stirs up dormant quarrels on mere suspicions and trifles, and by unfavourable constructions put on everything, even upon acts of kindness. As hatred by quarrels exposes the faults of others, so 'love covers' them; except in so far as brotherly correction requires their exposure. The reference is not to the covering of our sins before God, but the covering of our fellow-men's sins in respect to others. Love condones, yea, takes no notice of a friend's errors. The disagree...

Verse Proverbs 10:12. _HATRED STIRRETH UP STRIFES_] It seeks for occasions to provoke enmity. It delights in broils. On the contrary, love conciliates; removes aggravations; puts the best construction on every thing; and pours _water_, not _oil_, upon the _flame_....

LOVE COVERETH ALL SINS - i. e., First hides, does not expose, and then forgives and forgets all sins....

A man, whose heart is full of hatred and malice against his neighbour, will stir up, or awake, as the word d signifies, contentions and quarrels which were happily laid asleep; these he renews by tale bearing, and whisperings, and evil surmises; by raising lies, spreading false reports and calumnies, and by virulent reproaches and slanders; BUT LOVE COVERETH ALL SINS; not its own, but others; in imitation of the pardoning love and grace of God, which covers all the sins of his people with the blood and righteousness of his Son. Love spreads its mantle over the sins of its fellow creatures and Christians, and forgives them, even all of them: instead of exposing them, hides and conceals them; and, instead of loading and aggravating the infirmities of others, puts the best constructions on them, hopes and bears, and believes all things,...

II. THE PROVERBS OF SOLOMON: CHAPTER S 10--19:19 Beginning with the tenth chapter we have the collection of proverbs given by inspiration through Solomon. In this section the personal address, “My son,” and the personal exhortations are missing. It will be noticed that each verse in this section contains a proverb, consisting each of two lines, mostly of an antithetic character, except Proverbs 19:7, which has three lines instead of two (a tristich). It is impossible to give a detailed analysis of these Chapter s, nor can we take up each proverb separately for meditation. This must be left to each reader. By comparing Scripture with Scripture, and a prayerful study of these terse sayings, the heavenly wisdom given in these Chapter s can readily be found. There is no end to practical application. PROVERBS 10:2 (_cf._ Psalms 3:7). RIGHTEOUSNESS: the growth of the conception of righteousness is an important subject. As in the Pss., there is a specific class the righteous opposed to the wicked. The righteous are generally synonymous with the poor and afflicted remnant, sometimes equivalent to the Hasidim of the Greek period. In general the tendency of the conception of righteousness is towards a specific moral character, rather than towards the fulfilment of legal duties. This is important in view of the implied contrast in the Synoptic Gospels between the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, and such a righteousness as our Lord taught to be the condition of entrance into the kingdom of God (_cf._ Matthe

_love covereth_&c. See 1 Peter 4:8, where the use of _charity_for _love_in A.V. obscures the fact that it is probably a quotation of this proverb. The LXX., however, has here a different reading (πάντας δὲ τοὺς μὴ φιλονεικοῦντας καλύπτει φιλία), so that the Apostle must either have quoted from the Hebrew, or taken the proverb as it was then in common use.
