Proverbs 10:5

He that gathereth in summer is a wise son: but he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame. HE THAT GATHERETH IN SUMMER IS A WISE SON. A characteristic of "wise son" who "maketh a glad father" (). The "summer" or "harvest" time (as the second clause explains it) here represents the seasonable time for providing for ourselves. The time of youth and manhood; not deferring until old age. Also the time of health; not putting off until the time of sickness. (BUT) HE THAT SLEEPETH IN HARVEST IS A SON THAT CAUSETH SHAME - both to his parents and to himself at the last. Wisdom is similarly opposed to causing shame in ; ....

Verse Proverbs 10:5. _HE THAT GATHERETH IN SUMMER_] All the work of the field should be done in the _season suitable to it_. If _summer_ and _harvest_ be neglected, in vain does a man expect the fruits of _autumn_....

The son is called upon to enter upon the labors of others, and reap where they have sown. To sleep when the plenteous harvest lies ready for the sickle is the most extreme laziness....

Which is the time of gathering the fruits of the earth, and laying them up against winter, as the ant is said to do, Proverbs 6:8; [BUT] HE THAT SLEEPETH IN HARVEST [IS] A SON THAT CAUSETH SHAME; to himself, and to his parents and relations. The sum of the proverb is, that, in the time of health and youth, persons should be active and industrious in their several callings and stations, and provide against a time of sickness and old age; and that they should lose no opportunities, neither in a natural nor spiritual way, of doing or receiving good....

II. THE PROVERBS OF SOLOMON: CHAPTER S 10--19:19 Beginning with the tenth chapter we have the collection of proverbs given by inspiration through Solomon. In this section the personal address, “My son,” and the personal exhortations are missing. It will be noticed that each verse in this section contains a proverb, consisting each of two lines, mostly of an antithetic character, except Proverbs 19:7, which has three lines instead of two (a tristich). It is impossible to give a detailed analysis of these Chapter s, nor can we take up each proverb separately for meditation. This must be left to each reader. By comparing Scripture with Scripture, and a prayerful study of these terse sayings, the heavenly wisdom given in these Chapter s can readily be found. There is no end to practical application. PROVERBS 10:2 (_cf._ Psalms 3:7). RIGHTEOUSNESS: the growth of the conception of righteousness is an important subject. As in the Pss., there is a specific class the righteous opposed to the wicked. The righteous are generally synonymous with the poor and afflicted remnant, sometimes equivalent to the Hasidim of the Greek period. In general the tendency of the conception of righteousness is towards a specific moral character, rather than towards the fulfilment of legal duties. This is important in view of the implied contrast in the Synoptic Gospels between the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, and such a righteousness as our Lord taught to be the condition of entrance into the kingdom of God (_cf._ Matthe

_sleepeth_ Sleeps heavily, goes fast to sleep. Stertit, Vulg. Comp. Jonah 1:5-6, where the Heb. word is the same. This is an example of an exactly balanced proverb in the wording of the two clauses, especially if with R.V. marg. we render literally, _a son that doeth wisely … that doeth shamefully_. The LXX., having introduced another proverb at the beginning of this verse: "A son who receives instruction shall be wise, And shall serve himself of the fool as his minister," gives as the equivalent of our present proverb, "A prudent son shall be saved from the heat, But a son that is a transgressor shall be carried away by the wind in harvest....
