He that hideth hatred with lying lips, and he that uttereth a slander, is a fool. HE THAT HIDETH HATRED (WITH) LYING LIPS, AND HE THAT UTTERETH A SLANDER, IS A FOOL - rather, as the verses generally are distichs - i:e., composed of two parallel sentences-`He that hideth (i:e., dissembleth) hatred (is) of lying lips;' i:e., he speaks falsely, in order to hide his hatred, and to deceive his neighbour (, and especially , "He that hateth dissembleth with his lips;" ) The slanderer is "a fool," wise as he thinks himself, because he has no control over his evil-speaking tongue, which shall at last cause his perdition. Verse Proverbs 10:18. _HE THAT HIDETH_] This is a common case. How many, when full of resentment, and deadly hatred, meditating revenge and cruelty, and sometimes even murder, have pretended that they _thought nothing of the injury they had sustained_; had _passed by_ _the insult_, c.! Thus _lying lips_ covered the malevolence of a wicked heart....

Better, He who hideth hatred is of lying lips. He who cherishes hatred, is either a knave, or a fool - a knave if he hides, a fool if he utters it....

In this section the personal address, “My son,” and the personal exhortations are missing. It will be noticed that each verse in this section contains a proverb, consisting each of two lines, mostly of an antithetic character, except Proverbs 19:7, which has three lines instead of two (a tristich). It is impossible to give a detailed analysis of these Chapter s, nor can we take up each proverb separately for meditation. This must be left to each reader. By comparing Scripture with Scripture, and a prayerful study of these terse sayings, the heavenly wisdom given in these Chapter s can readily be found. There is no end to practical application. PROVERBS 10:2 (_cf._ Psalms 3:7). RIGHTEOUSNESS: the growth of the conception of righteousness is an important subject. As in the Pss., there is a specific class the righteous opposed to the wicked. The righteous are generally synonymous with the poor and afflicted remnant, sometimes equivalent to the Hasidim of the Greek period. In general the tendency of the conception of righteousness is towards a specific moral character, rather than towards the fulfilment of legal duties. HE THAT HIDETH HATRED, &C.— The LXX read, _Honest lips hide hatred; but they who utter reproaches, are the greatest fools;_ and the Syriac, _The lips of the wicked hide hatred; and he that uttereth a curse is a fool._ Nothing more easy than to conceal malice.
