Proverbs 15:2

The tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright: but the mouth of fools poureth out foolishness. THE TONGUE OF THE WISE USETH KNOWLEDGE ARIGHT - in the seasonable time, and proper place, and with due regard to the character of the hearers; all being adjusted to the balance of the sanctuary. BUT THE MOUTH OF FOOLS POURETH OUT [ yabiya` (H5042 )] FOOLISHNESS - babbleth it out at random, without choice or digested order, confusedly, copiously, with rapidity, and continuously, like a bubbling fountain....

Verse Proverbs 15:2. _USETH KNOWLEDGE ARIGHT_] This is very difficult to know: - _when_ to _speak_, and _when_ to be _silent; what_ to _speak,_ and _what_ to leave _unspoken_; the _manner_ that is best and most suitable to the _occasion_, the _subject_, the _circumstances_, and the _persons_. All these are difficulties, often even to the wisest men. Even _wise counsel_ may be _foolishly_ given....

USETH KNOWLEDGE ARIGHT - Rather, makes knowledge goodly. The power of well-considered speech to commend true wisdom, is contrasted with the pouring (literally as in the margin) forth of folly....

EXPOSITION PROVERBS 15:1 A SOFT ANSWER TURNETH AWAY WRATH. Two things are here to be observed: an answer should be given—the injured person should not wrap himself in sullen silence; and that answer should be gentle and conciliatory. This is tersely put in a mediaeval rhyme— "_Frangitur ira gravis_ _Quando est respensio suavis_." "Anger, however great, Is checked by answer sweet." Septuagint, "A submissive (ὑποπίπτουσα)_ _answer averteth wrath." Thus Abigail quelled the excessive anger of David by her judicious submission (1 Samuel 25:24, etc.). BUT GRIEVOUS WORDS STIR UP ANGER. A word that causes vexation makes anger rise the higher. Ὁργῆς ματαίας εἰσὶν

THE TONGUE OF THE WISE USETH KNOWLEDGE ARIGHT,.... As the heart of a wise and good man is filled with useful knowledge, civil, moral, spiritual, and evangelical; so he takes care to communicate it, at proper times and seasons, in proper places, and to proper persons; adapting it to their case and circumstances, so as it may be for their comfort, edification, and instruction, and minister grace unto them; which is using knowledge "well", as the word s signifies: such an use of it recommends it, and makes it appear beautiful and lovely, decorates and adorns it. Thus every good man, out of the good treasure of knowledge in his heart, brings forth his good things seasonably, to the use of edifying; in like manner, ministers of the word, scribes well instructed in the things of God, bring forth both new and old, to the profit of those to whom they minister; so Christ, as man and Mediator, had...

CHAPTER 15 THE BETTER THINGS One can read through the proverbs recorded in this chapter and ask the question, What are the better things? A soft answer which turneth away wrath is better than grievous words Proverbs 15:1. The tongue of the righteous which useth knowledge aright is better than the mouth of fools Proverbs 15:2. PROVERBS 15. This chapter makes no new departure. Proverbs concerning the moral government of the world again occupy the chief place. One (Proverbs 15:11) is noteworthy as showing an extended conception of the sphere of God's government. Earlier Heb. religion regarded Sheol as outside the kingdom of God; there the dead do not praise or remember Him. We have also some more psychological proverbs dealing with the value of cheerfulness. _useth knowledge aright_ Or, _uttereth_, &c. R.V. Lit. MAKETH GOOD KNOWLEDGE, i.e. turns it to good account, makes the best of it. Comp. "they make goodly (lit. as here, make good) images or pillars," Hosea 10:1. The contrast is between the good use of knowledge which adds to its usefulness, and the reckless pouring forth of folly which increases its hurtfulness; between the pure stream flowing in useful channels, and the pestilential flood bursting forth unrestrained.
