Proverbs 15:24

The way of life is above to the wise, that he may depart from hell beneath. THE WAY OF LIFE (IS) ABOVE TO THE WISE, THAT HE MAY DEPART FROM HELL BENEATH. The way of the wise tends upwards toward the heavenly life of the angels (cf. ; ). His aspirations and desires are heavenwards. 'In proportion as each thing in this machine of the world is more elevated, the more noble and excellent it is, as heaven excels the elements' (Rabbi Levi)....

Verse Proverbs 15:24. _THE WAY OF LIFE_ IS _ABOVE TO THE WISE_] There is a _treble_ antithesis here: 1. The way of the _wise_, and that of the _fool_. 2. The one is _above_, the other _below_. 3. The one is of _life_, the other is of _death_....

ABOVE ... BENEATH - The one path is all along upward, leading to the highest life. It rescues the “wise” from the other, which is all along downward, ending in the gloom of Sheol....

EXPOSITION PROVERBS 15:1 A SOFT ANSWER TURNETH AWAY WRATH. Two things are here to be observed: an answer should be given—the injured person should not wrap himself in sullen silence; and that answer should be gentle and conciliatory. This is tersely put in a mediaeval rhyme— "_Frangitur ira gravis_ _Quando est respensio suavis_." "Anger, however great, Is checked by answer sweet." Septuagint, "A submissive (ὑποπίπτουσα)_ _answer averteth wrath." Thus Abigail quelled the excessive anger of David by her judicious submission (1 Samuel 25:24, etc.). BUT GRIEVOUS WORDS STIR UP ANGER. A word that causes vexation makes anger rise the higher. Ὁργῆς ματαίας εἰσὶν

THE WAY OF LIFE [IS] ABOVE TO THE WISE,.... Of "the way of life"; Proverbs 10:17; this is said to be "above", or it tends "to [what is] above"; it leads to heaven and happiness above; the life itself it is the way of or to is above, it is hid with Christ in God; eternal life, glory, and happiness, is above; it is a house eternal in the heavens, an inheritance reserved there, and will be there enjoyed by the saints: the way to it is above; Christ is the way, and he is in heaven, at the Father's right hand, through whom only men can come at this life; wherefore those who are in the way of it have their thoughts, their hearts, their affections and conversations, above, Matthew 6:21. CHAPTER 15 THE BETTER THINGS One can read through the proverbs recorded in this chapter and ask the question, What are the better things? A soft answer which turneth away wrath is better than grievous words Proverbs 15:1. The tongue of the righteous which useth knowledge aright is better than the mouth of fools Proverbs 15:2. Better is the prayer of the upright than the sacrifice of the wicked Proverbs 15:8). PROVERBS 15. This chapter makes no new departure. Proverbs concerning the moral government of the world again occupy the chief place. One (Proverbs 15:11) is noteworthy as showing an extended conception of the sphere of God's government. Earlier Heb. religion regarded Sheol as outside the kingdom of God; there the dead do not praise or remember Him. We have also some more psychological proverbs dealing with the value of cheerfulness.
