The light of the eyes rejoiceth the heart: and a good report maketh the bones fat. THE LIGHT OF THE EYES (THE EYES OF A GREAT MAN REGARDING ONE WITH FAVOUR, ; ESPECIALLY THE "LIGHT OF GOD'S COUNTENANCE" LIFTED UP UPON ONE, ; ) REJOICETH THE HEART: (AND) A GOOD REPORT MAKETH THE BONES FAT - as it were, supplies them with marrow; affects with good the very inmost parts of the frame, through the sympathy that there is between the mind and the body. Such is the effect on the whole man of hearing effectually the Gospel "good report," or message of the King of kings....

The man who has a _correct judgment_, and an _accurate eye_, may not only _amuse_, but _instruct_ himself endlessly, by the beauties of nature and art....

THE LIGHT OF THE EYES - The brightness which shines in the eyes of one whose heart and face are alike full of joy. Such a look acts with a healing and quickening power. Compare Proverbs 16:15. A GOOD REPORT - i. e., Good news....

EXPOSITION PROVERBS 15:1 A SOFT ANSWER TURNETH AWAY WRATH. Two things are here to be observed: an answer should be given—the injured person should not wrap himself in sullen silence; and that answer should be gentle and conciliatory. This is tersely put in a mediaeval rhyme— "_Frangitur ira gravis_ _Quando est respensio suavis_." "Anger, however great, Is checked by answer sweet." Septuagint, "A submissive (ὑποπίπτουσα)_ _answer averteth wrath." Thus Abigail quelled the excessive anger of David by her judicious submission (1 Samuel 25:24, etc.). BUT GRIEVOUS WORDS STIR UP ANGER. A word that causes vexation makes anger rise the higher. Ὁργῆς ματαίας εἰσὶν

THE LIGHT OF THE EYES REJOICETH THE HEART,.... Not so much the visive power, the faculty of seeing, a strong and clear eyesight; though this is a great mercy, and from the Lord, and to be prized, and does give joy of heart; but rather the objects seen by the light of the eyes, as Jarchi; as green gardens, flowing rivers, pleasant meadows, rising hills, lowly vales, herbs, plants, trees, birds, beasts, and creatures of every kind; nor is the eye ever satisfied with seeing; especially light itself beheld rejoiceth the heart, and particularly that grand luminary and fountain of light, the sun. PROVERBS 15. This chapter makes no new departure. Proverbs concerning the moral government of the world again occupy the chief place. One (Proverbs 15:11) is noteworthy as showing an extended conception of the sphere of God's government. Earlier Heb. religion regarded Sheol as outside the kingdom of God; there the dead do not praise or remember Him. We have also some more psychological proverbs dealing with the value of cheerfulness. _The light of the eyes_ This is sometimes understood to mean the beaming eyes of kindly regard with which others look upon us (comp. the phrase "the light of the countenance," Psalms 4:6 [Hebrews 7]; Proverbs 16:15). "We all want to see that light in the eyes of our friends, which rejoices the heart," Horton. Occurring, however, in a proverb, the phrase may well have a wider meaning: whatever gives light acts as a luminary (the Heb. word is rather light-bearer, φωστήρ, comp. In the same manner that the sensible light rejoices a sound eye, and diffuses its pleasure through the whole soul, a good reputation gives pleasure, and contributes to the health of the body. The wise man frequently advises his disciple for a good reputation. He often proposes to him human motives to incline him to virtue and his own good.
