And, behold, there met him a woman with the attire of an harlot, and subtil of heart. AND, BEHOLD, THERE MET HIM A WOMAN (WITH) THE ATTIRE OF AN HARLOT, AND SUBTIL OF HEART. How readily those meet who are akin in feelings and aims! As he seeks evil, so it "meets" him by God's just appointment. The woman had all the open marks of an harlot: the bare neck, and breasts half exposed, the mincing tripping gait, and thin dress, and other incentives to excite admiration and lust: therefore the youth was the more inexcusable in being caught by such a one. 6-27 Here is an affecting example of the danger of youthful lusts. It is a history or a parable of the most instructive kind. Will any one dare to venture on temptations that lead to impurity, after Solomon has set before his eyes in so lively and plain a manner, the danger of even going near them? Then is he as the man who would dance on the edge of a lofty rock, when he has just seen another fall headlong from the same place. The misery of self-ruined sinners began in disregard to God's blessed commands. We ought daily to pray that we may be kept from running into temptation, else we invite the enemies of our souls to spread snares for us. Ever avoid the neighbourhood of vice. Beware of sins which are said to be pleasant sins. They are the more dangerous, because they most easily gain the heart, and close it against repentance. Do nothing till thou hast well considered the end of it....

Verse Proverbs 7:10. _A WOMAN_ WITH _THE ATTIRE OF A HARLOT_] It appears that sitting in some open place, and covering the face, or having a veil of a peculiar kind on, was the evidence of a harlot, Genesis 38:14; Genesis 38:15-1. No doubt, in Solomon's time, they had other distinctions. A married woman, and an adulteress, as the following account of her shows; as soon as ever she discerned the young man before described, who she knew, by his air, walk, and dress, was a fit person for her turn, she at once set out from her house, or the corner where she stood, and met him; she did not wait till he came up and made his suit to her, but she went out, and first attacked him; wherefore the word "behold" is prefixed as a note of admiration at the impudence of the woman, and as a note of attention to observe the consequence of this affair. CHAPTER 7 The entire chapter is a continuation of the strange woman and the warning against her. The Word and the law of the Lord will keep the obedient son from her. If Solomon had obeyed the Word of God, not to multiply wives (Deuteronomy 17:17) his end would not have been spent in the degrading fellowship with the harlots of other nations. The description is very graphic. What the word pictures is as prominent in the great centers of Christendom as it was thousands of years ago in Babylon and Egypt. And so it is still true: _ She hath cast down many wounded;_ Yea, many strong men have been slain by her. Her house is the way to hell, Going down to the chambers of death. But think of Solomon after having received these inspired descriptions and warnings, that he should have been forgetful of them all....

_attire of a harlot_ Comp. Genesis 38:14; Ezekiel 16:16; Ezekiel 16:25; Bar 6:43. _subtil_ Lit. HIDDEN, or KEPT CLOSE, and so, _subtil_, or _wily_, because she keeps such strict watch over her heart as not to allow its true motives and feelings to appear. The LXX. and Vulg. understand it to refer to her action on the hearts or passions of her victims, ἣ ποιεῖ νέων ἐξίπτασθαι καρδίας, præparata ad capiendas animas....
