Proverbs 7:20

He hath taken a bag of money with him, and will come home at the day appointed. HE HATH TAKEN A BAG OF MONEY WITH HIM - literally, in his hand. This shows he is gone a long journey, and for some time, or he would not need so much money. (AND) WILL COME HOME AT THE DAY APPOINTED - or else, at the day of the full moon. Not until then; so you need have no fear [ keece' (H3677), either from kaacah (H3680), to cover, when the moon is covered by the sun; or from kaacac (H3699), to count; hence, to fix or appoint a time]....

6-27 Here is an affecting example of the danger of youthful lusts. It is a history or a parable of the most instructive kind. Will any one dare to venture on temptations that lead to impurity, after Solomon has set before his eyes in so lively and plain a manner, the danger of even going near them? Then is he as the man who would dance on the edge of a lofty rock, when he has just seen another fall headlong from the same place. The misery of self-ruined sinners began in disregard to God's blessed commands. We ought daily to pray that we may be kept from running into temptation, else we invite the enemies of our souls to spread snares for us. Ever avoid the neighbourhood of vice. Beware of sins which are said to be pleasant sins. They are the more dangerous, because they most easily gain the heart, and close it against repentance. Do nothing till thou hast well considered the end of it....

Verse Proverbs 7:20. _HE HATH TAKEN_] Literally, "The money bag he hath taken in his hand." He is gone a journey of itinerant merchandising. This seems to be what is intended. AND _WILL COME HOME AT THE DAY APPOINTED._] ליום הכסא _leyom_ _hakkase_, the _time fixed_ for a return from such a journey. The _Vulgate_ says, "at the full moon." The _Targum_, "the day of the assembly." In other words, He will return by the _approaching_ _festival_....

Or, "in his hand" a; either for merchandise, as Gersom; or for defraying: the charges of his journey; and both suppose length of time: if for merchandise, it required time to purchase goods, and see them packed up and sent away; or if for his journey, since it was not a few pieces of money he put in his pocket to defray expenses, but a bag of it he carried in his hand, it shows that he should be out a considerable time; [AND] WILL COME HOME AT THE DAY APPOINTED; and not before: Aben Ezra interprets it, at the beginning of the month, at the new moon, when the moon is covered b, which Horace c calls "tricessima sabbata": but rather it is to be understood of the full moon, as Aquila and the Vulgate Latin version render it; when it is light all night, and so a proper time for travelling home again. Gersom takes it to mean the beginning of the year,...

CHAPTER 7 The entire chapter is a continuation of the strange woman and the warning against her. The Word and the law of the Lord will keep the obedient son from her. If Solomon had obeyed the Word of God, not to multiply wives (Deuteronomy 17:17) his end would not have been spent in the degrading fellowship with the harlots of other nations. The description is very graphic. What the word pictures is as prominent in the great centers of Christendom as it was thousands of years ago in Babylon and Egypt. And so it is still true: _ She hath cast down many wounded;_ Yea, many strong men have been slain by her. Her house is the way to hell, Going down to the chambers of death. But think of Solomon after having received these inspired descriptions and warnings, that he should have been forgetful of them all....

The longest and most elaborate description of the adulteress, the fate of her victim, and the value of wisdom as a safeguard. PROVERBS 7:1. General advice to the young man to observe the commandments and the torah of the sage, that he may be preserved from the adulteress. THE DAY APPOINTED. the new moon....

_a bag of money_ to cover his expenses for a considerable time. _day appointed_ Rather, FALL MOON. Comp. Psalms 81:3, _in the time appointed_, A.V. (as here), but _full moon_, R.V. "A fortnight later, as now it would seem to have been new moon when the nights are dark." Nutt, in _O. T. Comm. for English Readers_....

AT THE DAY APPOINTED— _At the day of full-moon._ Houbigant renders the clause, _Nor will he return to his house before the full moon;_ which the woman plainly gives as a reason for removing all apprehensions and fears of detection from the simple youth whom she is soliciting to destruction....
