Proverbs 7:16

I have decked my bed with coverings of tapestry, with carved works, with fine linen of Egypt. I HAVE DECKED MY BED WITH COVERINGS OF TAPESTRY, WITH CARVED (WORKS), WITH FINE LINEN OF EGYPT. The history () especially mentions that "Solomon had ... brought out of Egypt ... linen yarn; the king's merchants received the linen yarn at a price." "Carved works" means tapestry worked in variegated colours (Maurer). But the Hebrew for "carved (works)" is ordinarily used of carving wood or stones, so that the reference will thus be to the "carved" pillars of the bed. However, as it comes between "tapestry" and "linen," it may refer to the tapestry, metaphorically said to be carved, as resembling carved stones....

6-27 Here is an affecting example of the danger of youthful lusts. It is a history or a parable of the most instructive kind. Will any one dare to venture on temptations that lead to impurity, after Solomon has set before his eyes in so lively and plain a manner, the danger of even going near them? Then is he as the man who would dance on the edge of a lofty rock, when he has just seen another fall headlong from the same place. The misery of self-ruined sinners began in disregard to God's blessed commands. We ought daily to pray that we may be kept from running into temptation, else we invite the enemies of our souls to spread snares for us. Ever avoid the neighbourhood of vice. Beware of sins which are said to be pleasant sins. They are the more dangerous, because they most easily gain the heart, and close it against repentance. Do nothing till thou hast well considered the end of it....

Verse Proverbs 7:16. _I HAVE DECKED MY BED_] ערשי _arsi_, "my couch or sofa;" distinguished from משכבי _mishcabi_, "my bed," Proverbs 7:17, _the place to sleep on_, as the other was _the place to recline on_ at _meals_. The _tapestry_, מרבדים marbaddim, mentioned here seems to refer to the covering of the _sofa_; exquisitely _woven_ and _figured_ cloth. חטבות אטון _chatuboth etun_, the _Targum_ translates _painted carpets_, such as were manufactured in _Egypt_; some kind of _embroidered_ or _embossed stuff_ is apparently meant....

The words point to the art and commerce which flourished under Solomon. CARVED WORKS - Most commentators take the original as meaning “striped coverlets of linen of Egypt.”...

CHAPTER 7 The entire chapter is a continuation of the strange woman and the warning against her. The Word and the law of the Lord will keep the obedient son from her. If Solomon had obeyed the Word of God, not to multiply wives (Deuteronomy 17:17) his end would not have been spent in the degrading fellowship with the harlots of other nations. The description is very graphic. What the word pictures is as prominent in the great centers of Christendom as it was thousands of years ago in Babylon and Egypt. And so it is still true: _ She hath cast down many wounded;_ Yea, many strong men have been slain by her. Her house is the way to hell, Going down to the chambers of death. But think of Solomon after having received these inspired descriptions and warnings, that he should have been forgetful of them all....

The longest and most elaborate description of the adulteress, the fate of her victim, and the value of wisdom as a safeguard. PROVERBS 7:1. General advice to the young man to observe the commandments and the torah of the sage, that he may be preserved from the adulteress. DECKED, &C. These words in verses: Proverbs 7:16; Proverbs 7:17, are rare words appropriately put into the lips of. foreigner....

_deckt_… with. _coverings_ Lit. COVERED … WITH COVERINGS, or CUSHIONED … WITH CUSHIONS, the words being two forms of the same Heb. root, which does not occur elsewhere. _bed_ or, _couch_: a different and more poetic word than that in Proverbs 7:17. It is used for a couch of moss and flowers, "also our couch is green," Song of Solomon 1:16. with _carved_works &c. Rather, WITH STRIPED CLOTHS OF THE YARN OF EGYPT, R.V.
