Who coverest thyself with light as with a garment: who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain: WHO COVEREST THYSELF WITH LIGHT AS WITH A GARMENT. The general glory put on by God as a garment at creation is here transferred to one department-namely, the calling forth of light, with which creation began. The light meant is not that "light which no man can approach unto" (), but that which was first unfolded at creation, and which daily illuminates us (). The Hebrew participles imply continued action. WHO COVEREST THYSELF WITH LIGHT AS WITH A GARMENT - Referring to the first work of creation Genesis 1:3, “And God said, Let there be light, and there was light.” He seemed to put on light as a garment; he himself appeared as if invested with light. It was the first “manifestation” of God. He seemed at once to have put on light as his robe. WHO STRETCHEST OUT THE HEAVENS LIKE A CURTAIN - As an expanse spread over us. The word used here means a curtain or hanging, so called from its tremulous motion, from a word meaning to tremble. Thus it is applied to a curtain before a door; to a tent, etc. It is applied here to the heavens, as they seem to be “spread out” like the curtains of a tent, as if God had spread them out for a tent for himself to dwell in. I trust that we have already felt something of holy enjoyment while our hearts and voices have been praising the Lord our God. Perhaps this Psalm may help to keep us in a praising state of mind. First of all, David sang of the majesty of God in his works; then it seems as if the spirit of praise within him became like a strong-winged angel, and, mounting into the sky, he began to soar aloft over the varied landscapes of the world until the sun went down; and even then, he continued scudding along through the darkness till the sun arose again, and found him still praising his God.
