Psalms 104:5

Who laid the foundations of the earth, that it should not be removed for ever. WHO LAID THE FOUNDATIONS OF THE EARTH, THAT IT SHOULD NOT BE REMOVED FOREVER. What is denied is not the earth's motion, but the possibility of its being disturbed from the place in the universe which God has assigned it. What is here said of His laying the foundations of the earth, answers to what was said of the heavens, . It is still the work of the second day of creation that is referred to. As the upper part of the world-frame, the sky, is firmly constructed, though it has only water for its beams, so the lower part, the earth, is firmly founded by God's omnipotence, though it rest upon nothing to support it. WHO LAID THE FOUNDATIONS OF THE EARTH - Referring still to the creation of the earth. The margin is, “He hath founded the earth upon her bases.” The Hebrew word rendered in the margin “her bases” means properly a place; then a basis or foundation. The idea is, that there wes something, as it were, placed under the earth to support it. The idea is not uncommon in the Scriptures. Compare the notes at Job 38:4. THAT IT SHOULD NOT BE REMOVED FOR EVER - So that it cannot be shaken out of its place. That is, It is fixed, permanent, solid. Its foundations do not give way, as edifices reared by man. but it abides the same from age to age - the most fixed and stable object of which we have any knowledge. I trust that we have already felt something of holy enjoyment while our hearts and voices have been praising the Lord our God. Perhaps this Psalm may help to keep us in a praising state of mind. First of all, David sang of the majesty of God in his works; then it seems as if the spirit of praise within him became like a strong-winged angel, and, mounting into the sky, he began to soar aloft over the varied landscapes of the world until the sun went down; and even then, he continued scudding along through the darkness till the sun arose again, and found him still praising his God.
