Psalms 105:28

He sent darkness, and made it dark; and they rebelled not against his word. HE SENT DARKNESS, AND MADE IT DARK. The second last plague is only alluded to (). The "darkness" is mainly figurative. Hence, there follows, as the result the "darkness" which comprises the whole series of ten plagues, AND THEY REBELLED NOT AGAINST HIS WORD - any longer, as heretofore. This result did not follow the "darkness" in the limited sense of the one plague; but it did follow the whole ten, including the last-the destruction of the first-born. Compare . So "I create darkness" is used figuratively, ; ;...

In the 28thverse he specifics one of these miracles, which yet was not the first in order, but from which it is easy to gather that God was the author of the deliverance of Israel, and in which the course of nature was entirely changed; for nothing is more astonishing than to see the light turned into darkness. In the second clause, he commends the faithfulness of Moses and Aaron, in courageously executing whatever God had commanded them: _And they were not rebellious against his words _(224) There was, as if it had been said, the most perfect harmony between the command of God and the obedience of both his servants....

24-45 As the believer commonly thrives best in his soul when under the cross; so the church also flourishes most in true holiness, and increases in number, while under persecution. Yet instruments shall be raised up for their deliverance, and plagues may be expected by persecutors. And see the special care God took of his people in the wilderness. All the benefits bestowed on Israel as a nation, were shadows of spiritual blessings with which we are blessed in Christ Jesus. Having redeemed us with his blood, restored our souls to holiness, and set us at liberty from Satan's bondage, he guides and guards us all the way. He satisfies our souls with the bread of heaven, and the water of life from the Rock of salvation, and will bring us safely to heaven. He redeems his servants from all iniquity, and purifies them unto himself, to be a peculiar people, zealous of good works...

Verse Psalms 105:28. _THEY REBELLED NOT AGAINST HIS WORD._] Instead of ולא מרו _velo maru_, "they rebelled," some think that a ש _shin_ has been lost from before the word, and that it should be read ולא שמרו _velo shamru_, "they did not observe _or_ keep his word." Or the words may be spoken of _Moses_ and _Aaron_; they received the commandment of God, and they did not rebel against it. They believed what he had spoken, and acted according to his orders. It could not be spoken of the _Egyptians_; for they rebelled against his words through the whole course of the transactions....

AND THEY REBELLED NOT AGAINST HIS WORD - More literally, “his words.” The reference is to Moses and Aaron; and the idea, as expressed here, is that they were obedient to the command of God; that they went and did what he ordered them; that, although he required them to go before a mighty and proud monarch, to denounce against him the vengeance of heaven, and to be the instruments of bringing upon the land unspeakably severe judgments, yet they did not shrink from what God commanded them to do. They were true to his appointment, and showed themselves to be faithful messengers of God. It is a song of praise to God for his dealings with his people, resembling in its general character Psalms 78:1. The opening passage is nearly identical with 1 Chronicles 16:8, and is thought to have been the original from which that passage was taken (Hengstenberg, Cheyne). Psalms 105 AND 106 The Memories of the Past The last two Psalms of this fourth section review the entire history of Israel up to the time of the judges. It is the story of God's faithfulness and mercy, and the story of their shameful failure and apostasy. He is ever mindful of His covenant, and that covenant is mentioned first, as the foundation of all. Then how He watched over them. The story of Joseph is mentioned, followed by the rehearsal of the deliverance out of Egypt. Psalms 106:1 is couched in words of confession, showing their failure all the way, sinning, forgetting, lusting, unbelieving and disobedient. Only infinite mercy and grace could save such a people.
