Fools because of their transgression, and because of their iniquities, are afflicted. FOOLS - sinners, in Bible diction; because sin is suicidal folly. BECAUSE OF THEIR TRANSGRESSION - literally, 'because of the way of their transgression.' ARE AFFLICTED. God brings their inward folly to outward view by punishment....

17_Fools are afflicted on account of the way of their transgression. _He comes to another species of chastisement. For as he observed above, that those were given over to captivity who refused to yield obedience to God, so now he teaches that others have been visited by God with disease, as the fruit of their transgressions. And when the transgressor shall find that it is God who is administering correction to him, this will pave the way for his arriving at the knowledge of his grace. He denominates those _fools, _who, thoughtlessly giving themselves up to sensuality, bring destruction upon themselves. 17-22 If we knew no sin, we should know no sickness. Sinners are fools. They hurt their bodily health by intemperance, and endanger their lives by indulging their appetites. This their way is their folly. The weakness of the body is the effect of sickness. It is by the power and mercy of God that we are recovered from sickness, and it is our duty to be thankful. All Christ's miraculous cures were emblems of his healing diseases of the soul. It is also to be applied to the spiritual cures which the Spirit of grace works. He sends his word, and heals souls; convinces, converts them, makes them holy, and all by the word. Even in common cases of recovery from sickness, God in his providence speaks, and it is done; by his word and Spirit the soul is restored to health and holiness....

Verse Psalms 107:17. _FOOLS BECAUSE OF THEIR TRANSGRESSION_] This is the THIRD _comparison_; the captivity being compared to _a person in a_ _dangerous malady_. Our Version does not express this clause well: _Fools_ מדרך פשעם midderech pisham, because of the way of their _transgressions, are afflicted_. Most human maladies are the fruits of sin; _misery_ and _sin_ are married together in bonds that can never be broken....

FOOLS, BECAUSE OF THEIR TRANSGRESSION - Wicked people, considered as fools, because they “are” transgressors. Compare Psalms 14:1, note; Psalms 73:3, note; Psalms 75:4, note. The immediate allusion here, probably, is to the Jews, who had been so wicked and so supremely foolish in violating the commands of God, and making it necessary to bring upon them as a punishment the captivity at Babylon; but the language is made general because it will with equal propriety describe the conduct of all wicked people. EXPOSITION A SONG of thanksgiving, first for deliverance from the Babylonish captivity (Psalms 107:1), and then for other deliverances (Psalms 107:4), passing into a general account of God's providential dealings with mankind, both in the way of chastisement and of loving-kindness, but especially the latter (Psalms 107:33-19).
