23-32 Let those who go to sea, consider and adore the Lord. Mariners have their business upon the tempestuous ocean, and there witness deliverances of which others cannot form an idea. How seasonable it is at such a time to pray! This may remind us of the terrors and distress of conscience many experience, and of those deep scenes of trouble which many pass through, in their Christian course. Yet, in answer to their cries, the Lord turns their storm into a calm, and causes their trials to end in gladness....

Verse Psalms 107:26. _THEY MOUNT UP TO THE HEAVEN_] This is a most natural and striking description of the state of a ship at sea in a storm: when the _sea_ appears to _run mountains high_, and the vessel seems for a moment to stand on the sharp ridge of one most stupendous, with a valley of a _frightful depth_ between it and a similar mountain, which appears to be flying in the midst of heaven, that it may submerge the hapless bark, when she descends into the valley of death below. This is a sight the most terrific that can be imagined: nor can any man conceive or form an adequate idea of it, who has not himself been at sea in such a storm. _THEIR SOUL IS MELTED BECAUSE OF TROUBLE._] This is not less expressive than it is _descriptive_. THEY MOUNT UP TO THE HEAVEN - The mariners. That it refers to the seamen, and not to the waves, is apparent from the close of the verse: “their soul is melted.” THEY GO DOWN AGAIN TO THE DEPTHS - The word here is different from that used in Psalms 107:24, and rendered “deep,” but the idea is essentially the same. It is the sea or ocean considered as “deep;” as bottomless. The idea here is, that they seem to descend into the very depths of the ocean. THEIR SOUL IS MELTED BECAUSE OF TROUBLE - It seems to dissolve; it loses all its vigor; it faints. The word used - מוג _mûg_ - means to melt; to flow down; to soften; and is then applied to the heart or mind that loses its courage or vigor by fear or terror....

EXPOSITION A SONG of thanksgiving, first for deliverance from the Babylonish captivity (Psalms 107:1), and then for other deliverances (Psalms 107:4), passing into a general account of God's providential dealings with mankind, both in the way of chastisement and of loving-kindness, but especially the latter (Psalms 107:33-19). The composition closes with a single gnomic reflection on the wisdom of pondering such matters as those brought forward by the writer. THEY GO DOWN AGAIN TO THE DEPTHS: one while they seem to reach the skies, and presently they are down, as it were, in the bottom of the sea, and are threatened to be buried in the midst of it; distress at sea is described in much the same language by Virgil and Ovid m. _PSALMS 107:26_. &C. _THEY MOUNT UP,_ &C.— There cannot be conceived any thing more poetical or sublime, than this description of a storm at sea; a subject on which the most celebrated poets have employed their pens. It would be a pleasing task, if the nature or limits of our work allowed it, to compare this description of the Psalmist's with those of ancient and modern writers. But we are denied this agreeable task; and shall only add, that those who will make the comparison will find how much superior are the ideas and expressions of the sacred poet, to those of uninspired writers.
