THE LORD IS HIGH ABOVE ALL NATIONS - Hebrew, Exalted above all nations is Yahweh. That is, he rules over all nations; he directs their affairs; he is their sovereign king. As a matter of fact, and from the necessity of the case, he is on a throne which is elevated above all the kings and kingdoms of the world. He is the Sovereign not only of one nation, but of all; and it is meet that this should be acknowledged by them all. AND HIS GLORY ABOVE THE HEAVENS - That which renders him glorious. The manifestations of his glorious character are not confined to the earth; they extend to the heavens; they are not confined to the visible heavens; they extend far beyond, in the regions of illimitable space. EXPOSITION This is the first of the "Hallel" psalms, or of those sung at the Feasts of the Passover, Pentecost, and Tabernacles. It is a "Hallelujah psalm," like the two preceding, but is not alphabetic. As a most joyful hymn of praise, it is selected by our Church to be one of the psalms for Easter Day. The composition falls into three stanzas of three verses each. In the first (Psalms 113:1) the servants of the Lord are called upon to praise him. In the second (Psalms 113:4) God is praised in the heavens, with respect to his glory there. In the third (Psalms 113:7) he is eulogized in respect of his great doings upon the earth....

We will read, this evening, two passages in the Word of God; the first will be Psalms 113:1 . Psalms 113:1. _Praise ye the LORD. Psalms 113 Hallelujah! Praise His Name! This third Hallelujah Psalm begins with a Hallelujah and ends with Hallelujah. It is given in the Authorized Version as “Praise ye the Lord” (as in all these Psalms). It would be more sublime to maintain this grand old Hebrew word “Hallelujah.” His Name is praised. “Praise the name of the Lord--Blessed be the Name of the Lord.” Yea from the rising of the sun unto the going down, from one end of the earth unto the other, the Lord's Name is praised. He is above all nations. What Hannah so beautifully uttered in her song of Praise has come. “He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth the needy out of the dunghill; that He may set him with princes, even with the Princes of His people.” That is Israel redeemed by Him. And so is “the barren woman, a joyful mother of children.”...

CXIII. GOD ON HIGH CARES FOR THE LOWLY. Psalms 113:7. The dunghill is like Job's, waste and refuse heaped up outside the village and still the refuge of lepers and diseased persons of one kind or another....

This Ps. begins the group (113-118) known in the Jewish Church as the Hallel Psalms, or Hymns of Praise, from _hillel,_ to praise. They are sung at the Passover Feast—Psalms 113, 114 before the second cup, and 115-118 after the fourth cup; formerly recited also at the other two feasts, at the New Moons, and on the eight days of the Feast of Dedication (Cheyne).
