I believed, therefore have I spoken: I was greatly afflicted: I BELIEVED, THEREFORE HAVE I SPOKEN. As the former strophe was occupied with the deliverance, so this is taken up with the thanksgiving for it. "I believed," as Abraham did (; ); not that the Psalmist boasts of his faith, but mentions it in order to glorify the Lord, who had given him according to his faith. "Therefore have I spoken" (). 10._I have believed _That his wonderful deliverance may appear the more conspicuous, he again relates the imminent danger in which he had been placed. He begins by declaring that he spake in the true sincerity of his heart, and that nothing proceeded from his lips but what was the fruit of long reflection, and mature deliberation. Such is the import of the clause, _I have believed, therefore I will speak; _words which proceed from the full affection of the heart. I BELIEVED, THEREFORE HAVE I SPOKEN - This, in the Septuagint and Latin Vulgate, begins a new psalm, but without any good reason. This language is borrowed by the Apostle Paul to express his confidence in the truth of the gospel, and the effect which that confidence had on him in causing him to declare the truth. 2 Corinthians 4:13. The meaning here is, that in the time of his affliction the psalmist had true faith in God; and, as a result of that, he was able now to speak as he did. At that time he trusted in God; he called on him; he sought his mercy, and God heard his prayer; and now, as the consequence of that, he was enabled to give utterance to these thoughts. Hengstenberg regards it as composed for use at a festival service shortly after the return from the Captivity. Thou knowest that I love thee.» «I love the Lord.» Love is said to be blind, but not love to God. Love to God can see, and it can give a reason for its own existence, and a good substantial reason too. «I love the Lord.» Psalms 116:1. _Because he hath heard my voice and my supplications. A good reason for love will be found in the closet where prayer is answered.
