For thou hast delivered my soul from death, mine eyes from tears, and my feet from falling. FOR THOU HAST DELIVERED MY SOUL FROM DEATH, MINE EYES FROM TEARS, AND MY FEET FROM FALLING - alluding to , quoted above in . God has now delivered her from the failing of eyes, doubt of life, and restlessness of feet, threatened and executed against her for apostasy. The fullness of this deliverance is yet future, and was fulfilled only in type by the restoration from Babylon....

Verse Psalms 116:8. _THOU HAST DELIVERED MY SOUL FROM DEATH_] Thou hast rescued my _life_ from the _destruction_ to which it was exposed. _MINE EYES FROM TEARS_] Thou hast turned my _sorrow_ into _joy_. _MY FEET FROM FALLING._] Thou hast taken me out of the land of _snares_ and _pitfalls_, and brought me into a _plain path_. FOR THOU HAST DELIVERED MY SOUL FROM DEATH - My life. Thou hast saved me from death. This is such language as would be used by one who had been dangerously ill, and who had been restored again to health. MINE EYES FROM TEARS - Tears which he had shed in his sickness, and in the apprehension of dying. It may refer to tears shed on other occasions, but it is most natural to refer it to this. Compare the notes at Psalms 6:6. AND MY FEET FROM FALLING - From stumbling. That is, he had not, as it were, fallen by the way, and been rendered unable to pursue the journey of life. All this seems to refer to one occasion - to a time of dangerous illness....

EXPOSITION A PSALM of thanksgiving on deliverance from an imminent peril, placed in the mouth of an individual, but possibly intended for liturgical use on some occasion of a national deliverance. Hengstenberg regards it as composed for use at a festival service shortly after the return from the Captivity. Others adhere to the old Hebrew tradition, which ascribed it to Hezekiah, and considered it to have been written on the occasion of his deliverance from death, as narrated in Isaiah 38:1. Many resemblances are traced between the phraseology of the psalm and expressions attributed to Hezekiah in Isaiah 37:1; Isaiah 38:1....

FOR THOU HAST DELIVERED MY SOUL FROM DEATH,.... From a corporeal death, when his life was in danger, surrounded by Saul's army, in the hand of the Philistines at Gath, and when his son rebelled against him; and from a spiritual death in regeneration, which is a passing from death to life; and from an eternal death, the just wages of sin: and not only so, but even MINE EYES FROM TEARS; they were sometimes full of, and shed in great plenty; he watered his couch with them; and especially when absent from the worship of the Lord, and without his presence, which his enemies sometimes reproached him with; and particularly when he fled before his rebellious son, and at the death of him; but God dried up all his tears; see Psalms 6:6. Many are the occasions of the saints weeping as they pass through the valley of "Baca", but God will wipe away all tears from their eyes....

It begins well. Psalms 116:1. _I love the Lord,_ Can you say that? «Yea, Lord, thou knowest all things. Thou knowest that I love thee.» «I love the Lord.» Love is said to be blind, but not love to God. Love to God can see, and it can give a reason for its own existence, and a good substantial reason too. «I love the Lord.» Psalms 116:1. _Because he hath heard my voice and my supplications. A good reason for love will be found in the closet where prayer is answered. If you have ever been in trouble, and that Divine friend has listened to your feeble cries, you do love him, and you cannot help loving._ You wonder why others do not love him too. Psalms 116:2.
