_FOR MY LIFE IS SPENT WITH GRIEF, AND MY YEARS WITH SIGHING: MY STRENGTH FAILETH BECAUSE OF MINE INIQUITY, AND MY BONES ARE CONSUMED._ For my life ... grief - (Jeremiah 20:18.) MY STRENGTH ... INIQUITY. The Psalmist's infirmities and occasional grievous transgressions, through neglect of watchfulness, brought on him chastisement from the Lord, executed by his enemies (Psalms 38:4). Though, in relation to the Lord, he felt that his sin justly incurred the punishment, yet, in relation to them whose whole course was estranged from God, he could justly claim God's interposition in his behalf, on the ground of God's righteousness, since the general tenor of his life was that of a sincere servant of God. BONES ... CONSUMED - i:e., lose their strength....

Verse Psalms 31:10. _MY LIFE IS SPENT WITH GRIEF_] My life is a life of suffering and distress, and by grief my days are shortened. _Grief_ disturbs the functions of life, prevents the due concoction of food, injures the digestive organs, destroys appetite, impairs the nervous system, relaxes the muscles, induces morbid action in the animal economy, and hastens death. These effects are well expressed in the verse itself. _MY YEARS WITH SIGHING_] אנחה _anachah_. This is a mere _natural_ expression of grief; the very _sounds_ which proceed from a distressed mind; _an-ach-ah_! common, with little variation, to all nations, and nearly the same in all languages. The _och-och-on_ of the Irish is precisely the same sound, and the same sense. Thousands of beauties or this kind are to be found in the sacred language....

FOR MY LIFE IS SPENT WITH GRIEF - The word here rendered “spent” does not mean merely “passed,” as it is commonly now used, as when we say we “spent” our time at such a place, or in such a manner, but in the more proper meaning of the word, as denoting “consumed, wasted away,” or “destroyed.” See the word כלה _kâlâh_ as used in Jeremiah 16:4; Lamentations 2:11; Psalms 84:2 (Hebrews 3); Psalms 143:7; Psalms 69:3

EXPOSITION THIS psalm is, in the main, a cry for deliverance out of pressing danger and trouble; but it is interspersed with passages of a more cheerful tone, expressive of faith and confidence (Psalms 31:5, Psalms 31:14,_ _Psalms 31:15); and it winds up with a eulogy of God's goodness (Psalms 31:19), and an exhortation to the saints of God to "be strong," and trust in him.
