Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see, and bow down their back alway. LET THEIR EYES BE DARKENED, THAT THEY MAY NOT SEE, AND BOW DOWN THEIR BACK ALWAY - `and ever bow thou down their back;' expressive either of the decrepitude or of the servile condition to come on the nation through the just judgment of God. The apostle's object in making these quotations is to show that what he had been compelled to say of the then condition and prospects of his nation was more than borne out by their own Scriptures. But now, Secondly: Israel, even as a Nation, Is Not FINALLY Rejected, but Is Destined to a Glorious Recovery (Romans 11:11)...

1-10 There was a chosen remnant of believing Jews, who had righteousness and life by faith in Jesus Christ. These were kept according to the election of grace. If then this election was of grace, it could not be of works, either performed or foreseen. Every truly good disposition in a fallen creature must be the effect, therefore it cannot be the cause, of the grace of God bestowed on him. Salvation from the first to the last must be either of grace or of debt. These things are so directly contrary to each other that they cannot be blended together. God glorifies his grace by changing the hearts and tempers of the rebellious. How then should they wonder and praise him! Verse Romans 11:10. _LET THEIR EYES BE DARKENED_] All these words are _declarative_, and not _imprecatory_. God _declares_ what will be the case of such obstinate unbelievers; their _table_, their common providential blessings, will _become a snare_, a _trap_, a _stumbling_ _block_, and the means of their punishment. Their eyes will be more and more darkened as they persist in their unbelief, and their _back shall be bowed down always_; far from becoming a _great_ and _powerful nation_, they shall continue ever in a state of _abject_ _slavery_ and oppression, till they acknowledge Jesus as the promised Messiah, and submit to receive redemption in his blood....

AND DAVID SAITH ... - This quotation is made from Psalms 69:22. This Psalm is repeatedly quoted as having reference to the events recorded in the New Testament. (See the note at Acts 1:2.) This quotation is introduced immediately after one that undoubtedly refers to the Lord Jesus. Psalms 69:21, “they gave me also gall for my meat, and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.” The passage here quoted immediately follows as an imprecation of vengeance for their sins. “Let their table,” etc. The quotation is not made, however, either literally from the Hebrew or from the Septuagint, but the sense only is retained. Which is to be understood not literally of their being struck with blindness, as the men of Sodom were by the angels, and as Elymas the sorcerer was by the Apostle Paul; but mystically, of the eyes of their understandings being darkened, as they were by themselves and by Satan, and judicially by God; so that they could not see into the true same of the prophecies and promises concerning Christ; and how all the characters of the Messiah met in Jesus of Nazareth; their eyes were so blinded, that they could see no beauty nor comeliness in him; no excellency in his person, nothing wonderful in his works, nor amiable in his doctrine; nay, not only spiritual things, the things of the Gospel, were hid from the most wise and prudent among them, from their doctors and Rabbins, but also the things which regarded their temporal peace and happin...

THE ELECT REMNANT. Paul comes to the third part of his proof that God's word to Israel has not fallen through, despite the national rejection of Jesus Christ. ROMANS 11:1; ROMANS 11:2_ A._ That God has not cast away His people (_cf_. 1 Samuel 12:22; Psalms 94:14, etc.), the Israelite Paul is a living proof God's people, that is, whom He foreknew (_cf. Romans 8:29_ *, 1 Peter 1:2)....

So then, I ask, "Has God repudiated his people?" God forbid! I, too, am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, a member of the tribe of Benjamin. God has not repudiated his people whom long ago he marked out for his purposes. Do you not know what scripture says in the passage about Elijah? You remember how he talked to God in complaint against Israel: "Lord, they have killed your prophets; they have torn down your altars; and I alone am left and they are seeking my life." But what was the answer that came to him? "I have kept for myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to Baal." So, then, at this present time too, there is a remnant chosen by his grace. And if they were chosen by grace, their relationship to God is no longer dependent on works, for, if that were so, grace is no longer grace. What then?
