LA NECESSITÀ DELLA SANTA PERA

1 Pietro 1:17 . Se invochi il Padre, che senza rispetto delle persone giudica secondo l'opera di ciascuno, trascorri il tempo del tuo soggiorno qui con timore .

I CRISTIANI possiedono molti privilegi per mezzo del loro rapporto con Dio; tuttavia non sono i loro privilegi, ma il loro miglioramento pratico, che determinerà il loro stato nel mondo eterno. Sono chiamati ad essere santi sull'esempio del loro Dio; e devono essere conformi alla sua immagine, se vogliono essere partecipi della sua gloria. Non sarà loro mostrata più parzialità che ad altri nel giorno del giudizio.

Dio determinerà il destino di tutti con le loro azioni; e la condizione per la quale sono soddisfatte, sarà la condizione loro assegnata per tutta l'eternità. S. Pietro, inculcando il bisogno del santo timore, insiste su di esso in particolare perché ci conduca ad adeguarci a quel rigoroso resoconto al quale fra breve saremo tutti chiamati. Discutendo sulle sue parole mostreremo,

I. L'imparzialità del giudizio futuro—

The children of God maintain communion with God as their Father in Christ—
[The Apostle speaks of Christians as “obedient children;” and as calling upon the Father for a supply of their daily wants. This is the privilege of all true Christians; “a spirit of adoption is given them, that they may cry, Abba, Father;” and, because they are children, they may expect to receive all the glory of heaven as their inheritance — — —]
Nevertheless they will experience no partiality in the day of judgment—
[Among men it is but too common for parents to feel an undue bias in concerns relating to their children.

But God has established one mode of procedure for all. His written law is the standard to which every thing shall be referred. The principles from which our actions flowed, the manner in which they were performed, and the end for which they were done, will be minutely investigated, and a sentence passed upon us according to their real quality. There will be no difference in this respect between Jew or Gentile, rich or poor; nor will any regard be shewn to men’s professions: it will be to no purpose to plead, “that they had Abraham to their Father,” or that they had “cast out devils in the name of Christ;” the one inquiry will be, Were ye holy? and according as this appears, their state will be for ever fixed.]
Interested as we are in the event of that day, let us inquire into,

II.

The influence which this consideration should have upon us—

God requires us to pass our short span of life in fear—
[We are “sojourners in this world, as all our fathers were.” It is but a short time that any of us have to live, and then we shall be removed to our long home. The present state is a state of probation, a moment allotted us to prepare for eternity. Under such circumstances we should be “working out our salvation with fear and trembling.

” Not that we should indulge a servile dread of God as a hard master, and a vindictive judge, but a holy reverential fear of offending him, and a tender concern to please him in all things. This is “the fear in which we should walk all the day long.”]
Nor can any thing tend more to produce this fear in us than the consideration now before us—
[Shall I be judged according to my works? Will every action, word, and thought, be weighed in the balance of the sanctuary? Will all my motives be inspected by Him, who “searcheth the heart, and weigheth the spirits?” Surely I have need to fear, lest some hidden abomination lurk within me, and lest I should be “speaking peace to my soul when there is no peace.” I need be studious to please him, whose favour or displeasure are of such importance to my soul. If I must stand or fall for eternity, it becomes me to redouble my care.]

Now, methinks, you will say, ‘Give me some special directions, that I may know how to carry into effect the Apostle’s advice.’ This I will endeavour to do in four particulars.
1.

Be watchful against all occasions of sin—

[Nostro Signore ci ha insegnato a “pregare per non entrare in tentazione”; poiché nella tentazione quanto raramente manteniamo la nostra integrità! Non pretendano di temere Dio coloro che si espongono inutilmente agli assalti di Satana. Se vogliamo “mantenere pulite le nostre vesti”, dobbiamo stare attenti a dove e con chi camminiamo. Il comando di “uscire dal mondo” appare severo? non è severo, ma misericordioso e necessario. Se ti dicessi di non andare dove imperversava la peste, lo saresti grave ? Possa Dio consentire a tutti voi di obbedire attentamente, affinché possiate sfuggire all'infezione e vivere!]

2. Rifletti spesso sulla severità di quel controllo a cui dobbiamo sottoporci:

[Quando siamo tentati di peccare, non chiediamoci: cosa dirà il mondo? ma, come apparirà questo agli occhi di Dio? In che modo questo influenzerà il mio stato eterno? Applica questo pensiero ai tuoi doveri così come alle tue tentazioni; Come apparirà questo servizio quando sarà portato alla pietra di paragone della legge di Dio? Se questo sarà fatto, troppi di noi dovranno classificare i loro servizi tra i loro peccati più grandi.]

3. Applica continuamente il perdono al sangue di Cristo:

[Per quanto prudenti siamo, i nostri piedi contrarranno una certa contaminazione in questo mondo inquinato; e “se Cristo non ci lava, non possiamo avere parte con lui”. Infatti le nostre stesse lacrime hanno bisogno di essere lavate, e di cui pentirci i nostri pentimenti: non c'è altra fonte che quella del sangue del Redentore, che possa sempre purificarci. Lì, tuttavia, "i peccati anche di un dado cremisi possono essere resi bianchi come la neve". Non ci sia dunque ora in cui non ci bagniamo in quella fontana, affinché non si trovi peccato su di noi nel giorno in cui rendiamo il nostro conto a Dio.]

4. Sii molto in preghiera per la guida e l'assistenza dello Spirito Santo —

[Invano sarà tutta la nostra paura e cautela, se Dio non ci dirige e insieme non ci sostiene: se ci lascia per un momento, cadiamo; "Senza di lui non possiamo fare nulla". Allora preghiamo spesso: "Tienimi in piedi e sarò al sicuro". Così sfuggiremo alle insidie ​​tese ai nostri piedi e “saremo preservati irreprensibili nel suo regno celeste”.]
