_AND SHIMEI HAD SIXTEEN SONS AND SIX DAUGHTERS; BUT HIS BRETHREN HAD NOT MANY CHILDREN, NEITHER DID ALL THEIR FAMILY MULTIPLY, LIKE TO THE CHILDREN OF JUDAH._ His brethren had not many children - (see the notes at Numbers 1:22; Numbers 26:14.)...

Verse 1 Chronicles 4:27. _NEITHER DID ALL THEIR FAMILY MULTIPLY_] In Numbers 1:23 the number of all the families of Simeon was _fifty-nine thousand three_ _hundred_; and that of Judah was, Numbers 1:27, not less than _seventy-four thousand six hundred_. When the next census was made, Numbers 26, the tribe of Judah amounted to _seventy-six thousand_ _five hundred_, an increase of _one thousand nine hundred_; while the tribe of Simeon amounted only to _twenty-two thousand two hundred_, a decrease of _thirty-seven thousand one hundred_. It was at that time the smallest tribe in Israel....

EXPOSITION 1 CHRONICLES 4:1 After the large space given to the "sons of David," of the tribe of Judah, in the previous chapter, this chapter returns for twenty-three verses to group together a few additional ramifications of the same tribe, whose registers were for some reasons, perhaps not very evident, preserved and known. The first verses follow in the direction already indicated in 1 Chronicles 2:1; near the end of which we were left with Shobal and Haroeh, probably the same with Reaiah (the same name as Reaia, 1 Chronicles 5:5, though not the same person)....

Some went then to Gedor and found fat pasture and quietness. Others went to Mount Seir, and five hundred of them smote the Amalekites. Reuben was the firstborn, and the Chronicles state briefly why Reuben was not mentioned first in these genealogies. His birthright was given to the sons of Joseph. Judah, however, had

The Genealogy of Simeon 24. _The sons of Simeon_ in Genesis 46:10 and Exodus 6:15 we have six sons of Simeon named as against five here; _Jemuel_(here _Nemuel_), _Jamin_(as here), _Ohad_(not mentioned here), _Jachin_(here _Jarib_), _Zohar_(here _Zerah_), and _Shaul_(as here). In Numbers 26:12-13 the same list is given as here (except that _Jachin_stands for _Jarib_), and descendants are ascribed to the five. Ohad is omitted from Num. and Chron., perhaps as having no children....
