EXPOSITION 1 CHRONICLES 4:1 After the large space given to the "sons of David," of the tribe of Judah, in the previous chapter, this chapter returns for twenty-three verses to group together a few additional ramifications of the same tribe, whose registers were for some reasons, perhaps not very evident, preserved and known. The first verses follow in the direction already indicated in 1 Chronicles 2:1; near the end of which we were left with Shobal and Haroeh, probably the same with Reaiah (the same name as Reaia, 1 Chronicles 5:5, though not the same person)....

AND THEY DWELT AT BEERSHEBA,.... posterity of Simeon; and this and the other places of their habitation are mentioned in the same order, and with very little variation of names to the end of 1 Chronicles 4:31, as in Joshua 19:2 and here, at 1 Chronicles 4:31 it is added, THESE WERE THEIR CITIES UNTO THE REIGN OF DAVID; when, according to Kimchi, and other Jewish writers, he expelled them from thence, and restored them to the tribe of Judah....

(28) BEER-SHEBA, AND MOLADAH, AND HAZAR-SHUAL. — Joshua 19:2 adds Sheba after Beer-sheba — an obviously mistaken repetition, making fourteen towns in all, whereas 1 Chronicles 4:6 concludes, “thirteen cities and their villages.” Beer-sheba is _Bir-esseba;_ Moladah, _Tel-Milh,_ south of Hebron; Hazar-shual (fox-village) is unknown....
