_AND THEY SMOTE THE REST OF THE AMALEKITES THAT WERE ESCAPED, AND DWELT THERE UNTO THIS DAY._ Dwelt there unto this day. Many writers, among whom are the commentators Patrick and Poole, consider these last words to mean that the Simeonite settlers on mount Seir escaped the captivity of the other Israelites, and were still in undisturbed possession of mount Seir when the books of Chronicles were compiled after the restoration. 'There is nothing, therefore, improbable,' says Wilton ('Negeb.' p. 66), 'in the opinion that the Fellahin of Wady Musa are really descended from that little band of Simeonite adventurers, and that thus the prediction of the prophet Obadiah is even now receiving a primary fulfillment.'...

Verse 1 Chronicles 4:43. _THEY SMOTE THE REST OF THE AMALEKITES_] Those who had escaped in the war which Saul made against them, (see 1 Samuel 14:48,) and from David, who had attacked them afterwards, 2 Samuel 8:12. THE expedition of the Simeonites mentioned here, against _Gedor_ and _Seir_, was in the days of Hezekiah; and, as Calmet conjectures, near about the time of the captivity of the ten tribes, when the remnant of Simeon would feel themselves obliged to retire more _southward_, into Arabia Petraea, for fear of the Jews. These may be probable conjectures. - See _Calmet_. There are several things in the account of Jabez that are very instructive

UNTO THIS DAY - These words are probably taken from the record which the writer of Chronicles had before him, and do not imply that the Simeonites remained undisturbed in their conquests until after the return from the captivity. So 1 Chronicles 4:41....

EXPOSITION 1 CHRONICLES 4:1 After the large space given to the "sons of David," of the tribe of Judah, in the previous chapter, this chapter returns for twenty-three verses to group together a few additional ramifications of the same tribe, whose registers were for some reasons, perhaps not very evident, preserved and known. The first verses follow in the direction already indicated in 1 Chronicles 2:1; near the end of which we were left with Shobal and Haroeh, probably the same with Reaiah (the same name as Reaia, 1 Chronicles 5:5, though not the same person)....

That escaped the sword of Saul; though, according to the Jews n, 100,000 of them were slain by him in one day; and of the sword of David, though he is said not to leave man or woman alive, 1 Samuel 27:8 AND DWELT THERE UNTO THIS DAY; in the cities of the Amalekites, even of the posterity of the above; who were some of the remnant of Israel, that were not carried away by the king of Assyria, and who dwelt here after the return of the Jews from the Babylonish captivity, even in the times of Ezra, the writer of this book; see 2 Chronicles 34:9. n Midrash Esther, fol. 93. 4....

Some went then to Gedor and found fat pasture and quietness. Others went to Mount Seir, and five hundred of them smote the Amalekites. Reuben was the firstborn, and the Chronicles state briefly why Reuben was not mentioned first in these genealogies. His birthright was given to the sons of Joseph. Judah, however, had
