Read, “These are the sons of the father (i. e. chief) of Etam” 2 Chronicles 11:6, a city of Judah, not far from Bethlehem....

EXPOSITION 1 CHRONICLES 4:1 After the large space given to the "sons of David," of the tribe of Judah, in the previous chapter, this chapter returns for twenty-three verses to group together a few additional ramifications of the same tribe, whose registers were for some reasons, perhaps not very evident, preserved and known. The first verses follow in the direction already indicated in 1 Chronicles 2:1; near the end of which we were left with Shobal and Haroeh, probably the same with Reaiah (the same name as Reaia, 1 Chronicles 5:5, though not the same person)....

_these_were of _the father of Etam_ LXX. ("these were the sons of Etam" Αἰτάν) yields better sense. _Etam_(1 Chronicles 4:32) was a place; the "sons of Etam" would be families which derived their origin from the place....

THESE WERE OF THE FATHER OF ETAM— _These are the race of Etam._ Houbigant. The Hebrew may be rendered, says Kennicott, _these_ or _those are the father of Etam._ The ancient versions read _sons_ instead of _father._ At the end of the 7th verse Houbigant reads, _and Coz,_ and so, at the end of the 8th, _and Jabez._...
